Lee County completed a season sweep of county-rival Southern Lee on the tennis courts Wednesday afternoon. While two singles matches went to the wire with big Lady Cavalier comebacks, the Lady Yellow Jackets took five of the six matches and wound up with a 7-2 victory.

Just as the rivals did playing at Lee County three weeks ago, the doubles matches finished up under the lights.

At Nos. 5 and 6 singles, Madison Childs defeated Daisy Chang 11-9 and Emily Gotschalk defeated Kim Romo 11-9.

Chang fought back from down 4-9 to make 9-9 before Childs regained the lead and won the match. Romo trailed 6-9 before winning three straight games to make for a tense finish.

The Lady Jackets (6-5, 6-4)similarly won the first meeting with Southern Lee (4-8, 4-6), winning 7-2 but pulling out tight matches down the stretch which could've meant a different outcome.

Southern Lee's top singles player, sophomore Britta Bowers, won the lone Lady Cavalier point of the round with a 10-4 result versus Sydney Blum.

Chang and Romo won their doubles match for the second Lady Cavalier point.

Blum and Anna Barbee, and Mason Sanders and Kaitlin Gotschalk, teamed up to win doubles matches for the Lady Jackets, who finish the regular season with a winning record and finish the CFVC slate in third place, behind champs Terry Sanford and runner-up Union Pines.

"It's the most wins we've had here for as long as the girls can remember," said first-year Lady Jacket head coach Andrew Carucci.

"We've seen vast improvement by all the girls, from the exhibition players to our top players," Carucci said. "The most improved I'd say is Anna (Barbee). All the girls have shown hard work and perseverance all year long."

The postseason gets underway next week, with Lee County hosting the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament Wednesday and Thursday.
