Young Jackets qualify for regional golf tournament
A pair of Lee County golfers, sophomore Sam Bradley and freshman Walter Brinker qualified for the NCHSAA 4A Mideast Regional Tournament by carding matching 77s on Monday in the Tri-Nine Conference Championship at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary.
Lee County finished sixth in the final season standings for the Tri-Nine and sixth in Monday's tournament, with a team total of 326.
Brinker's and Bradley's rounds of 77, along with senior Michael Waters shooting an 86 and senior Zan Thornton shooting an 86, made up the Yellow Jacket score.
Green Hope, with a team total of 293, won its 11th straight Tri-Nine championship. Holly Springs, Athens Drive and Cary also earned team berths into the regional tournament. Cary, in fourth at 324, finished a stroke lower than Apex and two strokes better than the Yellow Jackets.
Brinker and Bradley qualified for the regional championship by being in the top four players not on a qualifying team.
Brinker earned Second Team All-Conference honors for the season, finishing eighth overall in the conference for best stroke average for the season.
The NCHSAA 4A Mideast Regional Tournament is slated for Monday at Raleigh Country Club.
