Yellow Jackets edge Cavs for tennis sweep
Taking two of the three doubles matches to make the difference, Lee County claimed a season sweep of county rival Southern Lee, by a narrow 5-4 score, as the Yellow Jackets and Cavaliers played their regular-season finales Thursday afternoon at Southern Lee.
Both meetings between the Jackets and Cavs, with the first being back in the opening week of the season at Lee County, were full of competitive matches. Lee County won its home match 7-2. The Cavs closed the gap in Thursday's matches, taking two more singles matches this time, with Jay Randolph and Jake Garner getting victories.
At No. 1 singles, Luke Foushee and Jared Abell played a great back-and-forth match which Foushee won for the Cavs in a tiebreaker.
Yellow Jacket doubles teams, Cameron Daniels and Ryan Babcock, and John Nguyen teaming with Dalton Cox, won matches for the fourth and fifth team points.
The Yellow Jackets finish the season 5-15 overall and 2-14 in the Tri-Nine. The Tri-Nine Conference Tournament is slated for Wednesday and Thursday at Cary Tennis Park.
The Cavaliers finish the regular season 7-7 overall and 7-5 in the Cape Fear Valley.
Southern Lee and O.T. Sloan Park will host the CFVC Conference Tournament Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, Southern Lee will host the opening rounds of singles while O.T. Sloan Park will host doubles. Southern Lee will host the final rounds for singles and doubles Thursday starting at 3 p.m.
