Lady Cavaliers start fast to top Lee County, 50-21
A short-handed Southern Lee girls basketball squad lost to county-rival Lee County back in December during the Yellow Jackets' holiday tournament.
Now late in the regular season, but in the first Cape Fear Valley Conference game between the Lady Cavaliers and Lady Jackets, both this season and ever, the Lady Cavs shot their way to a fast start and easily avenged the loss with a 50-21 victory Thursday night.
Perhaps carrying over a 34-point fourth quarter versus Union Pines two nights earlier, albeit in a rally that came up shy versus the Lady Vikings, the Lady Cavaliers came out smooth and sharp shooting the ball.
Senior shooting guard Jordanna Kalkhof found her range right away, canning two threes out of Southern Lee's first three times with the ball. A 6-2 Lady Cavalier lead was just the start.
Jasmine McIver's driving and Makenzie Cicogna's scoring in the lane kept the fast start going and the Lady Cavaliers led 19-2 after a quarter.
Kalkhof's fourth three-pointer of the game stretched the Lady Cavalier lead to 27-6 late in the half and after four straight Lady Jacket points, with the last few seconds running out, Kalkhof launched a jumper from beyond the top of the key and a soft bounce off the rim, off the backboard, and back onto the rim before falling through gave her five threes, 17 points in the half and a 30-10 Southern Lee lead.
The Lady Cavaliers took the lead over 20 points in the latter stages of the third period and the Cavs' second string got plenty of playing time in the fourth period.
Kalkhof led the Lady Cavaliers with 21 points, finishing with six three-pointers. Cicogna added 10 points. Erin Pickens had six points, 12 rebounds and five assists while McIver tallied five points, five steals and three assists.
Tashari Wells-Tucker and Tara Speelman scored four points each for the Lady Jackets. Wells-Tucker and Noelle Beattie had eight rebounds apiece.
Southern Lee (9-10, 4-5) travels to play Westover at 6 p.m. Friday evening. The Lady Wolverines topped the Lady Cavs 68-58 on Jan. 10. Lee County (6-13, 2-6) has four CFVC games to go in the last seven days of the regular season. The Lady Jackets host Terry Sanford at 6 p.m. Friday.
