Area scores: Jackets, Lady Jackets score easy CFVC wins
Lee County 16, Douglas Byrd 5
The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 2-0) made it three straight wins and a 2-0 week beginning Cape Fear Valley play Friday night at Douglas Byrd (3-3, 0-2).
Lee County has three games in three nights coming up this week starting with a CFVC home game versus Union Pines at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Jackets play at Pinecrest Wednesday and at Scotland Thursday.
Terry Sanford 6, Union Pines 1
Terry Sanford (1-3, 1-0) won its Cape Fear Valley Conference debut Friday night at Viking Field. Bulldog pitcher Joe Ingle held the Vikings to one run and three hits in 6.2 innings for the win.
The Vikings (3-3, 1-1) will play at Lee County at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Jordan-Matthews 3, Reidsville 0
Jet junior Josh Hudson fired a two-hitter blanking the Rams (1-3, 0-1) as Jordan-Matthews (3-2, 1-0) won its Mid-State Conference opener Friday night in Siler City.
Isaiah Stone hit a solo home run for the Jets, who will host Northwood at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday then play at Northwood Thursday night.
Pinecrest 17, Western Harnett 1
The Patriots (5-1) jumped out to an 8-1 lead through one inning and cruised to a five-inning win at Western Harnett (2-4) Friday night.
Zach Atkins (1-0) got the win for Pinecrest. The Eagles, who started the season 2-0, managed one hit versus the Patriots. Dylan Wallace hit a three-run home run as part of the Patriot slugging.
Western Harnett will host Harnett Central at 7 p.m. Monday. Pinecrest will host Pine Forest at 6 p.m. Monday.
Chatham Central 16, Gray Stone Day 6
The Bears (1-3, 1-1) broke open a close game with an eight-run sixth inning, taking a 16-6 lead, for their first win of the season Friday afternoon at CMC-NorthEast Stadium in Kannapolis.
Senior Chase Fuquay led the Bears going 4 for 4 at the plate with three runs and two RBI. Zach Burke went 3 for 4 with a run and two RBI. Tyler Welch and Andrew Jurden also drove in two RBI each.
Senior Camen Mitchell pitched 2.2 innings in relief and got the win.
Chatham Central travels for another Yadkin Valley game Tuesday, going to South Stanly for a 7 p.m. start.
Northwood 10, South Granville 9
The Chargers rallied from behind with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 10-8 lead, and prevailed versus visiting South Granville in a non-conference game Friday night in Pittsboro. Northwood (3-2, 1-0 Big Eight) will play a two-game set versus Jordan-Matthews, in Pittsboro Tuesday then in Siler City Thursday.
Harnett Central 10, East Wake 8
In the Greater Neuse River Conference opener for both squads, Harnett Central trailed 2-1 through four innings before scoring four in the top of the fifth and five in the sixth for a 10-2 lead over the Warriors (3-2, 0-1).
Ethan Barry went 2 for 4 with a double, a homer and five RBI for the Trojans (3-1, 1-0) while Daryl Johnson went 2 for 3 and scored three runs. Cole Hart pitched 4.0 innings giving up no hits and two runs, one unearned, for the victory.
Harnett Central will play at Western Harnett at 7 p.m. Monday.
Cape Fear 14, Overhills 0
Two Colt pitchers combined for a five-inning no-hitter and the Colts (4-0, 1-0) needed only five hits to post 14 runs, as the Jaguars (0-5, 0-2) tallied 10 errors, in a Mid-South Athletic game at Cape Fear Friday night. Overhills will host Triton at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
North Moore 10, Union Academy 7
The Mustangs (3-0, 2-0) defeated Yadkin Valley newcomer Union Academy (0-4, 0-2) Friday afternoon in Monroe. North Moore will host East Montgomery for a YVC game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Lee County 10, Douglas Byrd 0
The Lady Yellow Jackets (2-2, 1-1) handed Douglas Byrd (4-1, 1-1) its first loss of the season, doing so in five innings, in a CFVC game at Douglas Byrd Friday night. The Lady Jackets led 5-0 after two innings.
Lee County will host Union Pines at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Gray's Creek 22, Southern Lee 0
Taylor Jackson pitched a five-inning no-hitter and the Lady Bears (4-1, 2-0) piled up 25 hits in a CFVC win at Southern Lee Friday night. The Lady Cavaliers (0-5, 0-2) will host Chatham Central at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Union Pines 17, Terry Sanford 4
The Lady Vikings (4-0, 2-0) routed visiting Terry Sanford (0-4, 0-1) in a Cape Fear Valley game Friday. Union Pines will play at Lee County at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Chatham Central 2, Gray Stone Day 1
Chatham Central scored two in the bottom of the seventh to edge the visiting Lady Knights in a Yadkin Valley Conference game, and a rematch of a Lady Bear win in last year's state tournament, Friday afternoon. The Lady Bears (2-1, 2-0) will play at Southern Lee at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Pinecrest 10, Western Harnett 2
Pinecrest (5-0) remained perfect with a win at Western Harnett (1-5) Friday evening. The Lady Patriots scored five runs in the sixth to build an 8-1 lead.
Freshman Jordan Blake pitched five innings, allowing only an unearned run, to get the win. Madison Thum pitched two innings.
Bobbie McDaniel went 3 for 3 at the plate and scored three runs. Bri Embler, Brenna Barber and Anna Bridgman had two RBI each.
Pinecrest will host Pine Forest at 6 p.m. Monday while the Lady Eagles will host Harnett Central at 6 p.m. Monday.
Harnett Central 8, East Wake 2
The Lady Trojans (3-1, 1-0) opened their Greater Neuse River slate with a win at East Wake Friday night. Harnett Central will play at Western Harnett at 6 p.m. Monday. Harnett Central beat the Lady Eagles 13-12 in Angier on Monday.
Cape Fear 10, Overhills 0
Cape Fear blanked the Lady Jaguars (1-4, 0-2) in a Mid-South Athletic game Friday night. Overhills will host Triton at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
North Moore 10, Union Academy 0
The Lady Mustangs (3-0, 2-0) made it three for three scoring 10-plus runs with a Yadkin Valley win at home Friday evening versus the Lady Cardinals (1-4, 1-1). North Moore will play a YVC game at East Montgomery at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Pinecrest, with a 297 team total, won in a 20-school field and Pinecrest's Josh Martin won medalists honors with a 6-under par 66 Friday at Neuse Golf Club in Clayton.
The Patriots, the defending NCHSAA 4A state champions, defeated Myers Park by seven strokes and Hough by nine. Josh Stockwell and James Suggs shot rounds of 76 for the Patriots.
Pinecrest has a Southeastern Conference match set for Monday at Pinehurst No. 8.
Pinecrest 5, Hoke County 0
The Lady Patriots (4-0, 2-0) remained perfect with a Southeastern Conference win at Hoke County (2-2, 0-1) Friday evening. Sophie Flores and Hannah Sullivan scored two goals apiece and Mackenzie Lewis scored one for the Lady Patriots.
Pinecrest will visit Cardinal Gibbons Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start.
Union Pines 10, Westover 0
The Lady Vikings easily made it a 3-0 week starting Cape Fear Valley play with a mercy-rule win at Westover Friday night. Union Pines (3-0-1, 3-0-0) will visit Southern Lee (3-1, 2-0) Monday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Northwood 12, Orange 5
The Chargers (3-1) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening quarter and rolled by the visiting Panthers (2-2) for a third straight victory Friday evening.
Senior Wesley Meyer led the Charger attack with six goals and an assist. Sean O'Donnel had three goals and an assist.
Jacob Orbich had a goal and a team-high 11 ground balls for the Chargers. Rob Hamlet had a goal and went 4 for 4 on faceoffs as Northwood went 12 of 16 as a team on faceoffs. Sophomore keeper Eric Franklin made nine saves.
Northwood will play at Cedar Ridge at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Panther Creek 10, Pinecrest 3
The Catamounts rolled to a victory in Southern Pines Friday evening. Kahner George, Zach Fradenburgh and Luke DuCharme scored a goal each for Pinecrest (1-5).
The Patriots will host Holly Springs at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Panther Creek 11, Pinecrest 8
Panther Creek (3-1) defeated the Lady Patriots (2-3) Friday afternoon in Southern Pines.
Sami Ladouceur scored a hat trick for the Lady Patriots and Olivia Brock scored two goals.
Pinecrest will host East Chapel Hill at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
