Area scores: Cavs rally in first round of state playoffs

Southern Lee 7, West Craven 4

Southern Lee rallied from a 4-0 hole to advance through the first round of the NCHSAA 3A state baseball tournament Wednesday night at West Craven in Vanceboro.
Facing the No. 2 seed from the Coastal Conference, the Cavaliers (19-8) trailed by four after three frames before two big innings to turn the game around. The Cavaliers scored three in the fourth, then spurred by senior Ethan Helsman's two-run double to put Southern Lee in front for the first time in the game, they scored four in the top of the sixth for a 7-4 lead.
Senior Christian Wenger finished a complete game on the mound holding the lead in the West Craven sixth and seventh. Wenger (6-3) pitched his sixth complete game out of 11 starts this season. He added two RBI and a double at the plate.
The Cavaliers took advantage of four Eagle errors with three unearned runs.
Southern Lee, the No. 3 seed from the Cape Fear Valley, will hit the road again for the second round going to No. 1 Northern Nash (15-9, Big East Conference) for a 1 p.m. start Saturday.


Walkertown 3, Chatham Central 2 - 8 innings
Walkertown (18-4) answered two Bear runs in the top of the eighth inning with three tallies in the home half to win a NCHSAA 1A first round tournament game Wednesday evening.
Andrew Jurden's single scored Brandon Phillips and Zack Burke for the Bears (10-10).
Walkertown got its first runs of the game against Burke, who went the distance on the mound, to keep its season alive.
Burke finished allowing eight hits and no walks while striking out 10.


Northern Guilford 3, Union Pines 2
Northern Guilford (16-9) led 3-1 after two innings and held on from there in a NCHSAA 3A first round game at Union Pines (17-11) Wednesday night.
Emmitt Carden and Riley Cameron had an RBI each for the Vikings, the Cape Fear Valley's No. 2 seed. The Vikings drew within a run in the fifth inning.
Hunter Morgan got the win for Northern Guilford. Aaron Kennedy got the loss for the Vikings.


Trinity 2, Jordan-Matthews 1
Trinity (11-15) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth and upset top-seeded Jordan-Matthews (19-6) in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament Wednesday night in Siler City.
Drew Hinshaw singled in Hunter Causey putting the Jets ahead in the first inning.
Jordan-Matthews finishes the season as the Mid-State season and tournament champ.


East Montgomery 3, North Moore 2
East Montgomery (15-4), a No. 1 seed from the Yadkin Valley, edged wildcard North Moore (14-11) with a run in the bottom of the seventh in the first round of the NCHSAA 1A tournament Wednesday.
North Moore had tied the game, 2-2, with a run in the sixth.


Chatham Central 3, North Moore 2
After going 0-3 versus rival North Moore during the YVC regular season and tournament, Chatham Central (10-10) upset top-seeded North Moore (18-4) in the first round of the NCHSAA 1A State Tournament Wednesday evening in Robbins.
North Moore had defeated the Lady Bears 7-3 in Chatham Central's season finale, then 7-0 in the YVC Tournament.
The Lady Bears, a wildcard seed into the state tournament, will play at No. 2-seed Elkin in the second round at 5:30 p.m. this evening.


West Carteret 2, Union Pines 1
The Lady Vikings (12-10) held the host Lady Patriots (13-7) to three hits on the night but West Carteret advanced through the NCHSAA 3A first round Wednesday evening in Morehead City.


Jordan-Matthews 3, Providence Grove 1
The Lady Jets (18-4) advanced past former conference mate Providence Grove (11-10) in the NCHSAA 2A first round Wednesday night in Siler City.
Madison Poe drove in two of the three Jet runs. Hanna Stackhouse, Katie Black and Alanna Pyrtle scored a run apiece.
The Lady Jets have an eight-game winning streak going into the second round of states. Jordan-Matthews will host Eastern Randolph, another former conference rival, at 7 p.m. tonight.


Girls soccer
Northwood 2, Southern Lee 0
Northwood (14-6) defeated the Lady Cavaliers (11-7) for the second time this season, the first being a 3-1 win back in the opener for both squads on Feb. 27,  in the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament Wednesday in Pittsboro.
No. 16 Northwood will play No. 1 Cardinal Gibbons in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday. Cardinal Gibbons (20-1-2) defeated Northwood 5-0 and 3-0 in the two Big Eight matches this season.


Chatham Central 4, East Columbus 2
The No. 12-seeded Lady Bears upset No. 5 East Columbus (8-4-1) in the first round of the 1A state tournament in Lake Waccamaw Wednesday. The Lady Bears (5-12) advance to play at No. 4 Woods Charter (13-4-1) in Chapel Hill at 5 p.m. today.


Union Pines 3, Rockingham County 2
The Lady Vikings (21-2-3) defeated Rockingham County (6-9-2) in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament Wednesday in Cameron, setting up another home match in the second round. Union Pines, the No. 4 seed, will play No. 12 Hunt (13-7) at 7 p.m. Saturday.


Midway 3, Jordan-Matthews 2
Midway (13-4), the No. 10 seed in the 2A East Region, scored a goal in the second half of overtime for a 3-2 win over the No. 23 Lady Jets (7-10-1) in the first round of the state playoffs Wednesday.


Triton 3, Rocky Mount 2
Lady Hawk sophomore Morgan Goff scored a hat trick leading Triton (14-4-1) be visiting Rocky Mount (10-9-2) in the first round of the 3A state tournament Wednesday night.
Jailene Ocasio and Barbara Godwin had an assist each. Kala West made nine saves for the Lady Hawks.
No. 12 Triton plays at No. 5 Swansboro in the second round at 7 p.m. tonight.


North Moore 2, South Davidson 0
The Lady Mustangs (6-6-1) defeated conference foe South Davidson (8-9) for the third time in three matches this season in the first round of the NCHSAA 1A tournament Wednesday in Robbins.
North Moore will play No. 1 East Montgomery at 6 p.m. Saturday in the second round. In two YVC matches this season, East Montgomery defeated the Lady Mustangs 1-0 and the teams drew 1-1.
