Area scores: O'Neal's Majka sweeps hurdle state titles

Baseball

J.H. Rose 6, Pinecrest 3

J.H. Rose (22-2) advanced through the second round of the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament in Greenville Saturday.

The Patriots (20-6) took a momentary 3-2 lead with two runs, on Dalton Bullard’s two-RBI single, in the top of the fourth. The Rampants answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Ryan Bender’s RBI single moved Pinecrest to a 1-1 tie in the third inning.

 

Softball

Cape Fear Christian 10, Freedom Christian 0

Cape Fear Christian 5, Halifax Academy 2

Halifax Academy 10, Cape Fear Christian 2

Halifax Academy (15-4) won the NCISAA 1A state championship, advancing through the winners’ bracket, then defeating top-seeded Cape Fear Christian (19-4) in the second game of the final, Saturday at Oakwood School in Greenville.

The Lady Eagles lost in the second round of the tournament, then won three straight elimination games including game one versus Halifax.

Cape Fear Christian won the Carolina Christian Conference season and tournament titles this season.

From CFCA, Callie Ferrell and Julie Hodges made the NCISAA 1A Softball All-State Team.

 

Girls soccer

East Montgomery 3, North Moore 2 - PKs

No. 1 (1A Midwest) East Montgomery (15-1-3) needed penalty kicks to survive and advance by No. 8 North Moore (6-7- 2) in the NCHSAA 1A second round Saturday.

The match was knotted 1-1 at halftime and 2-2 at the end of regulation.

 

Cardinal Gibbons 2, Northwood 0

No. 1 (3A East) Cardinal Gibbons (21-1-2) beat No. 16 Northwood (14-7) in the second round of the NCHSAA 3A tournament Saturday night in Raleigh. In three meetings this season, Cardinal Gibbons outscored the Lady Chargers 10 -1.

 

Boys tennis

Cape Fear Academy 9, O’Neal 0

Top-seeded Cape Fear Academy (17-2) defeated No. 6 O’Neal (13-4) to win the NCISAA 2A state championship Saturday at Barton College. Cape Fear lost one match in three state-tourney victories. It’s the sixth state title in seven years for the Hurricanes.

The Falcons had upset No. 3 Arendell Parrott Academy in the quarterfinals as part of their state run.
