Cavs, Jackets show speed in the pool

Dec. 19, 2013 @ 05:02 AM

Southern Lee and Lee County both had individual victors, while Terry Sanford won the girls meet and Union Pines won the boys meet, as the Cape Fear Valley's swim squads held their fourth meet of the season at Campbell University's Johnson Aquatic Center Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers, while finishing fourth in both of the team standings, won five of the 22 events. Senior Saara Lindbohm won two races, both by wide margins, taking first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.38 and first in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.88.

Cavalier Steven Guerrero won twice, taking the 500 freestyle in 5:55.36 and the 200 IM in 2:23.90, and teammate Eli Brightbill won the 200 free in 2:06.98.

While without the depth of both Terry Sanford teams, the Cavs combined to trail only Terry Sanford, which won six individual firsts, in event victories for the night.

Lee County finished second in a tight three-team race in the boys meet. Union Pines tallied 346 points to 325 for the Jackets and 323 for Terry Sanford. The Vikings have won three of the four CFVC meets this season as there's now a break in the schedule until Jan. 7, then it will be just a couple weeks before postseason conference, region and state meets.

For the Yellow Jackets, it was the first second-place finish of the season. Phillip Morie won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.89 seconds and was second in the 50 free in 23.69. Terry Sanford's Connor Johnson won the sprint in 21.83.

Lee County's Austin Vogelsang won the 100 free in 58.76. For the Lady Jackets, Morgan Vogelsang won the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.54, nearly 11 seconds better than the field, and won the 100 free in 58.27, also by a comfortable distance.

Union Pines won the boys meet and took runner-up on the ladies side with many Vikings contributing.

Patrick O'Sullivan had two second-places, in the 100 butterfly in 1:08.32 and the 100 breast in 1:08.26. Zach Fedak placed second in the 100 back in 1:04.93.

For the Lady Vikings, Cassidy Fry won the 100 back in 1:10.49 and was second in the 200 IM in 2:33.99. Sophia Majuri was runner-up in the 50 free in 30.89 and Lily Majuri was second in the 100 free in 1:05.78.

The Vikings won the 200 medley relay. Lee County placed second in the boys 400 free relay, the last race of the night, to hang on to second.

Terry Sanford won all three girls relay events while winning with 374 points to 329 for Union Pines. The Lady Bulldogs have three team wins this season.

Along with top finishes and event wins, improvement is another key name of the game. Notching personal bests and building a deeper pool of swimmers will help through this season and for years to come says Lee County head coach Mark Kline.

"We're doing really well, especially considering our team is mostly freshman and they're mostly new to swimming," Kline said.

The Jackets new to the sport are cutting 12-15 seconds off their best times per meet and Kline is looking forward to three weeks with holidays, but time to practice.

"We're going to have time to work on basic skills," he said.

Simply teaching strokes other than freestyle has been part of the early season. Kline is hoping to have a few more swimmers be ready for back, fly and breaststroke events for the last few meets.

"They're all really good kids. They're very dedicated," he said.

The dedication includes practices starting at 6 a.m., sharp, often as the first practice of two-a-days before and after school. By comparison, meet days, even with the trip to Campbell, are the short days.

The final CFVC regular-season meet is set for Jan. 7 at Campbell and the conference championship will be at CU's natatorium on Jan. 21.
