Southern Lee’s girls basketball squad had its starting five back together again as Cape Fear Valley Conference play resumed Friday night. It didn’t make much of a difference to Union Pines (11-2, 4-0) as two unbeaten teams in the CFVC standings became just the Lady Vikings as they got a 63-40 win at home.

The league foes met in a non-conference game last week, with Union Pines winning 65-30 in the Yellow Jacket Holiday Basketball Classic.

Southern Lee (7-6, 2-1) played all three games in the tournament without starting point guard Jasmine McIver and starting forward Erin Pickens. Getting the two Lady Cavs back helped, but the Lady Vikings still made things tough on Southern Lee, forcing 24 turnovers on the night and pulling away in the second quarter.

After a back-door lay-up by Pickens started the scoring, the Lady Vikings rolled off the next 11 points, with five, including a three-pointer, by Nyona Shields leading the way.

Southern Lee worked back within an 11-7 deficit after a quarter and to within 13-11 shortly into the second period.

Shields, a freshman point guard, took over in a 16-3 Lady Viking run which spanned about four minutes. Her high-arcing running shot along the baseline made it 18-12 Lady Vikings, followed by Rachel Breassaeale laying in a Shields dish on a break.

Shields hit two more jumpers, then another triple. A bucket in the paint by Johnson made it 29-14 Union Pines.

The Lady Vikings led 33-21 at halftime and by as much as 42-21 in the third quarter.

Southern Lee chipped the lead in half and had chances to get within single digits in the fourth quarter. Makenzie Cicogna made two free throws and Southern Lee pressing led to Jordanna Kalkhof’s steal and lay-up getting the Lady Cavs to a 47-36 margin with more than six minutes to play.

The Lady Viking defense picked up its intensity from there and Johnson, a 6-foot sophomore, helped her side put the game away. She finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Tiffany Hicks, a 6-foot senior, had four points and 16 rebounds.

Shields had 18 points and four assists. Breassaeale collected six points, five assists, three blocks and three steals.

Cicogna led the Lady Cavaliers with 19 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Kalkhof and Pickens added six points each. Rachel Wilson led the Lady Cav rebounding with 11 boards.

Southern Lee is off for a week before hosting Westover at 6 p.m. Friday.

Union Pines travels to Western Harnett for a 6 p.m. tip on Monday.
