Golfers from South Africa, California and Charlotte lead or share the lead through the first of three rounds in the two Junior North and South Championship tournaments after play at Pinehurst No. 6 and Pinehurst No. 8 Tuesday.

Charlotte's David Kocher and South Africa's Jovan Rebula each shot 3-under-par 69 to be tied atop the 36th Junior Boys tournament being played at No. 8.

Kocher shot even-par 36 on the front nine before rolling off four consecutive birdies on holes 14-17. He's a recent graduate of Charlotte Christian and is going to continue his golf career at Maryland.

Rebula started on the 10th tee and started out with birdie threes on Nos. 10, 12 and 14 as part of shooting 33 on the back nine. He finished with nine threes on his scorecard. Rebula, 16, is a nephew of Ernie Els.

Pinehurst's Josh Martin shot even-par 72. Martin, a rising senior at Pinecrest, became the youngest North Carolina Amateur Championship victor in the 54-year history of the tournament in June.

At Carolina Golf Club in Charlotte, Martin shot a 4-under 67 in the final round to win the state championship. His winnings, $750, was donated by the Carolinas Golf Association to the Pinecrest golf program.

At Pinehurst No. 6, 17-year-old Brigette Dunne of Camarillo, Calif., shot a 5-under 67 and leads by four strokes. Dunne went 4 for 4 making birdies on the par fives, making six birdies and one bogey in all.

Madison Burnett, of Mableton, Ga., and Sarah Spicer, of Bahama, each shot 1-under 71.

Spicer, a rising junior, started with a 3-under 33 on the front nine and was still 3-under before making bogey on the last two holes.

Siranon Shoomee, a rising junior at Lee County, shot 77 in a round which looked good until going 4-over on her last three holes. She made three birdies on the day, including on No. 10 and No. 15, the two par fives on the second nine.

As a Lady Jacket, Shoomee is the reigning NCHSAA 3A state champion.

Play continues, with the boys on course No. 8 and the ladies on No. 6, today and tomorrow.
