Local golfers in hunt at North and South
Pinehurst's Josh Martin was one of two golfers to shoot 70 Wednesday in the second round of the 36th Junior Boys North and South Championship at Pinehurst No. 8. Today, Martin will be looking to add his hometown title to the North Carolina Amateur Championship he won last month in Charlotte.
Martin started his first round with a birdie on No. 10 in what became an even-par 72. He started his second round with birdies on one and two, then finished his day with seven consecutive pars.
Martin, a rising senior at Pinecrest High School, became the youngest player to win the state amateur championship in June.
D.J. Vogt, of Louisville, Ky., was the other golfer to shoot a 70 Wednesday, moving to even par overall.
David Kocher, of Charlotte, shared the lead through one round. He shot 69 Tuesday and 73 Wednesday to be 1 under. Martin, Kocher and Vogt will be the final grouping to begin play at 9:36 a.m. at Pinehurst No. 8.
Sanford's Siranon Shoomee carded one of the best rounds, one of a very few under-par rounds, of the day with a 2-under-par 70 on the second day of the 36th Junior Girls North and South Championship played at Pinehurst No. 6 Wednesday.
Shoomee, a rising junior at Lee County High School, shot a 5-over 77 Tuesday and opened her second round in the three-round tournament with a quadruple bogey eight on the first hole.
The rest of her round Wednesday was flawless to work her way way up the leaderboard, moving into a tie for eighth going into today's final round.
Shoomee, who's the reigning NCHSAA 3A state champion from last fall, made a birdie on the par-five No. 2. She rolled off three birdies in four holes on Nos. 7, 8 and 10. Her 70 was one of five 2-under scores which were the low rounds of the day.
First-round leader Brigette Dunne, a 17-year-old from Camarillo, Calif., followed a 67 with a 72 to stand 5 under overall. She led by four strokes through 18 holes and leads by five going to today's last 18.
Killian Casson, of Ellicott City, Md., and Jacqueline Twitty, of Chapin, S.C., both shot 70 and both are even par five shots behind Dunne.
