Gray's Creek wins playoff game over Cavs
Beating Southern Lee on the diamond for the second time in less than a week, Gray's Creek secured the Cape Fear Valley's No. 1 seed for the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament with a 3-1 win over the Cavaliers on Tuesday night at Western Harnett.
The Bears and Cavaliers were CFVC season co-champions and split their two meetings during the season. The two squads fell in the CFVC Tournament semifinals last week, setting up the need for the tiebreaker game.
Gray's Creek jumped ahead with two runs in the top of the first. A lone Cavalier run in the second, making it 2-1 Bears, was all the offense Southern Lee could put together. The Cavaliers outhit the Bears 9-6 for the night.
Seth Reeves started and pitched five innings to get the win for the Bears. Logan Haines pitched two innings and got the save.
Gray's Creek (17-5) is the top CFVC seed for the state tournament and the Bears will host Ledford in the first round Friday night at 7 p.m.
Southern Lee (20-7) drops to the third seed. The Cavaliers will play at Triton in the first round Friday at 7 p.m.
No. 2 Western Harnett (11-11) will host Eastern Guilford Friday at 7 p.m. No. 4 Union Pines (16-8) will travel to play Eastern Alamance Friday at 7 p.m.
