Williams bounces Lady Cavaliers from states

Williams 4, Southern Lee 1

Williams (17-2), the No. 2 seed from the 3A Mid-State Conference, topped visiting Southern Lee (9-8-1) in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament Wednesday night in Burlington in a match called at halftime due to thunderstorms.

Lady Cavalier senior and Methodist University commit Vicky Monroy scored in the 20th minute to make it 2-1 Williams.

Southern Lee went 6-3-1 in its last 10 matches of the season.

Williams advances to play at Union Pines Saturday in the second round.

Rockingham 2, Overhills 1

Rockingham (9-9), No. 4 seed from the Mid-State, won a 3A first round match at Overhills (12-6-3) Wednesday night.

It was the first loss in 11 matches, or since March 25, for the Lady Jaguars, who finished second in the Cape Fear Valley Conference.


White Oak 9, Triton 0

White Oak (17-4), No. 2 seed from the Coastal Conference, routed visiting Triton (9-11) Tuesday night in the 3A first round.


Northwood 4, Bunn 1

The Lady Chargers (11-7-1) prevailed over Northern Carolina's Bunn (7-7) in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament Wednesday night.

Northwood, No. 2 from the Carolina 12, will host Topsail (7-14-1) in the second round Saturday. Topsail, a wild card entry, won 3-0 at Beddingfield on Wednesday.

Cedar Ridge 4, Jordan-Matthews 3

The Lady Red Wolves (7-11-2), the No. 3 seed from the Carolina 12, won at Jordan-Matthews (10-7-3) in a 2A first round game Wednesday night. The Lady Jets were runners-up in the Mid-State this season.

Pinecrest 4, Harnett Central 0

Kathryn Palmer's hat trick led the Lady Patriots (15-2-3) over Harnett Central (8-10) and through the first round of the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament in Southern Pines Wednesday night.

Grace Ann Longfellow scored a goal for Pinecrest, the Southeastern Conference season and tournament champs.

Pinecrest will host Terry Sanford (15-7-1), No. 2 seed from the Mid-South, in Saturday's second round. Terry Sanford advanced with a 1-0 win vs. Garner Wednesday. The Lady Patriots beat Terry Sanford 2-0 in Southern Pines on April 26.
