Cavaliers, Jackets earn key league victories on the hardwood
Southern Lee 75, Union Pines 61
Cavalier center Justin McKinnon scored a team-high 17 points leading Southern Lee (10-9, 7-2) in a Cape Fear Valley win over the visiting Vikings Tuesday night.
Jalen Jackson and Juwon Jackson added 16 points each for the Cavs. Noah Mellette scored 10 points. The Cavaliers built up a 35-25 halftime lead.
Matthew Maness scored 19 points and Dionte Williams added 12 points for the Vikings (4-18, 0-10). Union Pines hosts Western Harnett Friday at 8 p.m.
Southern Lee goes to Douglas Byrd Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tip before hosting Overhills Tuesday at 8 p.m.
Lee County 62, Panther Creek 54
Lee County (11-10, 8-5) swept visiting Panther Creek, and remained ahead of the Catamounts (8-11, 7-7) for fourth place in the Tri-Nine standings Tuesday night at LCHS.
The Yellow Jackets held on after leading 26-21 at halftime.
Lee County played at Richmond County last night. The Jackets go to Green Hope for a Tri-Nine game Friday at 7 p.m. Green Hope (9-4 Tri-Nine) is third in the conference standings and beat Lee County 73-34 in their first meeting on Jan. 4.
Douglas Byrd 73, Western Harnett 39
Douglas Byrd rolled to a Cape Fear Valley win in Lillington Tuesday night. Roy’el Wright led Douglas Byrd (8-12, 5-4) with 18 points.
Elliott Terry led Western Harnett (2-18, 1-8) with 11 points.
Western Harnett goes to Westover tonight for a 7:30 p.m. start.
Carrboro 74, Northwood 62
Carrboro (16-3, 12-0) won for the first time in program history at Northwood (12-9, 9-4) in a Carolina 12 game Tuesday night.
Ti Pinnix led Northwood with 21 points. Aumad Walker added 11 points with Kadarus Rone and Chaz Bailey scoring 10 each for the Chargers.
Trai Sharp led Carrboro with 15 points and Marlin Johnson scored 14 points.
Northwood hosts Durham School of the Arts Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Graham 64, Jordan-Matthews 53
Graham (17-5, 8-2) swept the Jets (17-4, 5-4) for the regular season Tuesday night in Siler City.
Troy Bowden scored 22 points for the Red Devils and Kendall Patterson had 20 points and eight assists.
Derek Hamilton led Jordan-Matthews with 25 points. Casey Golden added 13 points.
Jordan-Matthews hosts Cummings Friday at 7:30 p.m.
North Rowan 66, Chatham Central 33
The visiting Cavaliers (18-3, 13-0) remained perfect in Yadkin Valley play Tuesday night at Bear Creek. North Rowan led 32-19 at halftime before winning the third period 23-0.
LaQuinn Mordecai led Chatham Central with nine points. North Rowan held Zack Burke, Chatham Central’s usual top scorer, to two points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Michael Bowman scored 13 points and Timothy Bates scored 11 for North Rowan.
The Bears (4-13, 3-9) played Gray Stone Day last night and will go to South Davidson Friday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
Pinecrest 55, Scotland 43
The Patriots (13-6, 4-3) won in Laurinburg, avenging an earlier loss to Scotland (2-15, 2-5) and getting above .500 again in Southeastern Conference play.
The Patriots host Purnell Swett Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Triton 70, Eastern Wayne 55
Senior forward Alex Burnett led the Hawks (17-3, 8-1) with 20 points and 17 rebounds as Triton won an Eastern Carolina game on the road.
Eastern Wayne (5-16, 2-8) was tied, 45-45, with the Hawks through three quarters before Triton took control. Maurice McBryde had 19 points and Dedrick Stacker added 11 points for the Hawks.
Triton hosts South Johnston Friday at 8 p.m.
Smithfield-Selma 56, Harnett Central 53
Smithfield-Selma (9-12, 3-9) rallied, winning the fourth period 18-7, to beat the visiting Trojans (8-11, 3-7) Tuesday night.
Freshman Anthony Staton led Harnett Central with 18 points. Tre Rogers added 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Trojans play at West Johnston Friday at 8 p.m.
Cape Fear Christian 74, Lee Christian 26
Cape Fear Christian rolled to an easy win in a Carolina Christian Conference game at Lee Christian Tuesday night.
Christian Natale led the Falcons with 17 points and Jack Burris added five points.
The Falcons (2-18, 1-11) host the Harnett County Warriors tonight at 7 p.m.
Fayetteville Acad. 81, O’Neal 68
Fayetteville Academy (18-7) beat visiting O’Neal (9-13, 4-5) in a Cape Fear Independent game Tuesday night.
Jaron Withers scored 27 points and Will Schaefer had 25 points for Fayetteville Academy.
Jack Johnston scored 26 points for O’Neal and Jacob Talbert scored 23.
O’Neal hosts Village Christian in the regular season finale for the Falcons Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Union Pines 35, Southern Lee 27
The Lady Vikings (10-12, 6-4) earned a season split with a Cape Fear Valley win at Southern Lee (10-10, 7-2) Tuesday evening. The Lady Cavaliers won 38-37 in Cameron on Jan. 4.
Union Pines took a 20-9 lead by halftime and held the lead from there. Stephanie Johnson led the Lady Vikings with 21 points and seven rebounds. Tiffany Hicks had six points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Center Ashley Owens led the Lady Cavaliers with 10 points and eight rebounds. Rachel Wilson added 10 rebounds.
Union Pines hosts Western Harnett Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Southern Lee goes to Douglas Byrd Friday for a 6 p.m. tip.
Panther Creek 68, Lee County 30
The host Lady Catamounts (13-8, 8-6) jumped out to a big lead, leading 21-5 after one period, and got a Tri-Nine win over Lee County (5-16, 0-13) Tuesday night.
De’ja Bland had six points, five steals and three assists for Lee County. Jasmine Person scored six points and Noelle Beattie had four points and nine boards.
Lee County played at Richmond last night and will host Green Hope for a league game Friday at 7 p.m.
Douglas Byrd 59, Western Harnett 49
Despite 38 points between sisters Geena and Erin Bryant, Douglas Byrd got 28 points from Sade Rogers and won in Lillington Tuesday night.
Geena Bryant led the Lady Eagles with 23 points.
Western Harnett (1-17, 1-8) plays at Westover tonight at 6 p.m.
Fayetteville Acad. 54, O’Neal 32
Fayetteville Academy beat the visiting Lady Falcons in a Cape Fear Independent game Tuesday .
Maggie Jackson led O’Neal with 10 points and Taylor Shelton added nine points. Rebecca Gainey led Fayetteville Academy with 12 points.
O’Neal (3-18, 2-7) hosts Village Christian Friday at 6 p.m.
Northwood 53, Carrboro 41
Shontai Totten scored 21 points to lead the Lady Chargers (17-4, 12-1) past visiting Carrboro Tuesday night. The Lady Chargers remain in second place, a game behind River Mill Academy, in the Carolina 12.
Gabby Mehringer had 10 points and Tyeshia Baldwin scored seven for Northwood.
Northwood hosts Durham School of the Arts Friday at 6 p.m.
Jordan-Matthews 59, Graham 47
After a loss at Graham earlier this season, the Lady Jets trailed the return match 25-19 at halftime, and still 40-39 through three quarters, in Siler City Tuesday night.
The Lady Jets (19-2, 8-1) won the last eight minutes 20-7 to split the regular season with Graham (14-8, 9-1) and move within a half-game of the top of the Mid-State standings.
Senior forward Mylia Garner led the Lady Jets with 27 points. Taylor Paige added 16 points.
Brie Snipes led Graham with 15 points.
Jordan-Matthews hosts Cummings Friday at 6 p.m.
Chatham Central 48, North Rowan 45
The Lady Bears (8-10, 7-5) turned around a 43-37 loss at North Rowan (10-8, 10-3) back on Jan. 4 with a win at home Tuesday night.
Chatham Central played Gray Stone Day last night and will go to South Davidson Friday for a 6 p.m. tip.
Eastern Wayne 53, Triton 39
Eastern Wayne (21-1, 10-0) got past visiting Triton (9-11, 5-4) to stay perfect in the Eastern Carolina Conference.
Elondia Grant led Eastern Wayne with 16 points.
Keitora Smith had 12 points and five rebounds for the Lady Hawks. Mallary Caroway had seven points and eight rebounds.
