Area scores: Wake Forest ends Patriot season in state playoffs

Wake Forest 17, Pinecrest 10

The first 11-win season in Pinecrest (11-2) history came to a close in the second round of the NCHSAA 4AA State Playoffs Friday night in Southern Pines. No. 12-seeded Wake Forest (10-3) won its second road game to reach the state quarterfinals.

The Cougars got out to a 17-3 lead by halftime. Wake Forest held the Patriots to 62 passing yards and 56 rushing yards.

Jackson Maples kicked a 36-yard field goal to cut the Cougar lead to 7-3. Quarterback Christian Ledbetter rushed for a 1-yard touchdown to bring the Patriots within a touchdown.

The last Patriot drive reached the Wake Forest 16-yard line before an interception.

Ledbetter rushed 26 times for 53 yards and was 10-for-16 passing for 62 yards. Bradley Black caught five passes for 31 yards.

Bryce Love led Wake Forest's running game with 10 carries for 58 yards and a touchdown.


Girls basketball

Grace Christian 68, Cape Fear Christian 42

The Lady Crusaders (5-0, 1-0) ran away from Cape Fear Christian with an 18-4 third quarter to begin their Carolina Christian Conference season with a road win Friday night.

Grace Christian led 35-25 at halftime before pulling away. Alexis Ross and Anna Murr co-led the Crusader scoring with 21 points each.

Karinda Farrant had 11 points, six rebounds, six assists, five steals and five blocks for the Lady Crusaders. Ross added nine steals, six rebounds and five assists. Madison Bolen had seven rebounds.

Cape Fear Christian (0-2, 0-1) will play at Northwood Temple on Dec. 3. Grace Christian will play at Wake Christian at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.


Union Pines 67, East Montgomery 26

The Lady Vikings (1-1) cruised to their first win of the season at East Montgomery Friday night. Union Pines will host North Moore at 6 p.m. Tuesday.


Chatham Charter 46, Research Triangle 22

The Lady Knights (1-1) got the first win of their inaugural varsity season Friday evening at home in Siler City. Chatham Charter will host Roxboro Community at 6 p.m. Tuesday.


Fuquay-Varina 41, Harnett Central 38

Harnett Central (0-1) fell in its season-opener at Fuquay-Varina (2-0) Friday evening. The Lady Trojans went 21-6 overall and 10-4 in the Greater Neuse River last season. Harnett Central will be in the Harnett County Tip-Off Tournament at Campbell Monday-Wednesday.


Boys basketball

Union Pines 70, East Montgomery 47

Senior forward Luke Davis led the Vikings with 24 points as Union Pines (1-1) won at East Montgomery Friday night.

Darrin Carlyle scored 11 points and Armani McCoy scored 10 for the Vikings, who got out to a 42-22 lead by halftime.

Union Pines will host North Moore at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.


Research Triangle 59, Chatham Charter 55

The visiting Raptors prevailed at Chatham Charter (0-2) Friday night in Siler City. The Knights will host Roxboro Community at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.


Grace Christian 74, Cape Fear Christian 43

The Crusaders (3-1, 1-0) won their first road game, and their first Carolina Christian Conference game, of the season Friday at Cape Fear Christian (0-4, 0-1).

The Eagles will host Jonathan's House Christian at 6 p.m. Monday. The Crusaders will travel to face Wake Christian at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.


Fuquay-Varina 45, Harnett Central 36

The Bengals (1-1) topped the visiting Trojans (0-1) in the season-opener for Harnett Central Friday night. The Trojans will play in the Harnett County Tip-Off Tournament Monday-Wednesday at Campbell.
