Comeback gives Apex sweep over Jackets

Boys basketball

Apex 56, Lee County 44

After Lee County controlled the third quarter to take a lead, Apex (9-7, 7-2) dominated the last eight minutes for a 56-44 win over the host Yellow Jackets (9-8, 6-3) Friday night in Tri-Nine basketball.

After a tied game at the half, the Yellow Jackets won the third period 16-6 for a 40-30 lead. The Cougars turned everything around with a 26-4 fourth quarter.

Ian Boyd led Apex with 15 points and T.J. Evans had 13 points. Apex won both regular season meetings with Lee County.

Junior guard Hunter Jackson led the Jackets with 12 points. Dante Graham and Jason Payne scored 10 points each. Dewaun McEachin added eight points.

Friday's game was the first of Lee County's second circuit through the Tri-Nine Conference and it put the Jackets into fourth place in the conference.

Lee County will go to Fuquay-Varina Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip. The Jackets beat the Bengals 67-54 on Dec. 7.


Girls basketball

Apex 57, Lee County 31

Apex (10-6, 5-4) completed a season sweep over the Lady Yellow Jackets (5-12, 0-9) Friday night in Apex.

The Lady Cougars held a 22-11 halftime lead and pulled away from there. Elle Hepburn led Apex with 13 points and Emily Sasser had 11 points.

Nikki Hoover led Lee County with eight points. Quitta Wilson scored seven points and De'ja Bland had six points.

Lee County will host Fuquay-Varina Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Northwood 67, N.C. School of Science and Math 18

Northwood (11-3, 7-0) bolted out to a 31-2 lead by the end of one quarter against the visiting Unicorns (0-11, 0-8) in a Carolina 12 game Friday night.

Senior guard Gabby Mehringer led the Lady Chargers with 17 points. Shontai Totten had 12 points and Jasmine Atkins had 10 points.

The Lady Chargers have won five straight games and will play at Franklin Academy Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Pinecrest 42, Purnell Swett 9

Pinecrest led 20-2 after one quarter and rolled to a Southeastern Conference win on the road Friday night. Pinecrest (8-6, 1-1) held Purnell Swett (2-11, 0-3) to two points in the second half.

The Lady Patriots dominated inside with Felicia Painter totaling 21 points and 14 rebounds and Janea Williams getting eight points and 12 rebounds.

Pinecrest will host Scotland in a league game Tuesday at 6 p.m.

North Moore 50, South Stanly 43

The Lady Mustangs (10-5, 5-3) won a Yadkin Valley Conference game at South Stanly (2-11, 1-7), moving to a four-game winning streak, on Friday night.

North Moore will host North Rowan Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.

Boys basketball

Northwood 75, N.C. School of Science and Math 45

Northwood had four players score in double digits for a Carolina 12 win on the road Friday night.

Aumad Walker and Kadarus Rone scored 12 points each for the Chargers (8-6, 5-2) and Brett Svendsen and Chris Smith added 10 points each. Northwood led 32-19 at halftime.

Joseph Chukwu led the Unicorns (2-9, 2-8) with 33 points.

Northwood will play Greensboro Day at the Greensboro Coliseum Monday at 3 p.m.

North Moore 65, South Stanly 60

The Mustangs (8-7, 5-3) won their third straight game, all being Yadkin Valley games, Friday night at South Stanly (5-9, 4-4). North Moore will host North Rowan Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

Pinecrest 74, Purnell Swett 59

The Patriots (11-3, 2-0) led 39-23 at halftime and kept going to a Southeastern Conference win at Purnell Swett (3-11, 0-2) Friday night.

Junior post player Trevion Wooten led the Patriots with 18 points. Adam Cummings had 15 points and Brendan Ortiz had 14 points.

Pinecrest will host Scotland for an SEC game Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

C.B. Aycock 67, Triton 62 - OT

After a 57-57 score through regulation, C.B. Aycock edged the visiting Hawks in an Eastern Carolina Conference game Friday night, giving the Hawks their first ECC defeat.

Maurice McBryde led the Hawks with 25 points and Dedrick Stacker added 17 points.

A.J. Mundle led C.B. Aycock (7-9, 2-3) with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Triton (13-3, 4-1) will host Southern Wayne in an ECC game Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
