Defending champs down Yellow Jackets
Middle Creek 7, Lee County 1
After two postponements, the Yellow Jackets finally got their baseball campaign underway but did so against the defending 4A state champion at Middle Creek (2-1, 1-0) Monday night.
Lee County (0-1, 0-1) continues on the road for three straight games opening the season; playing at Pinecrest Friday at 5 p.m. then at Grimsley Saturday at 2 p.m.
Union Pines 8, Asheboro 5 - 8 innings
At Asheboro Monday evening, the Vikings (2-1) scored two runs in the seventh to tie the game, 5-5, then three in the eighth to beat the Blue Comets (1-2).
Kyle Robinson's two-out single scored Jeffrey Thompson to make it 5-5 in the seventh.
Thompson went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI while pitching the last 4.0 innings, giving up no runs and two hits, to get the victory. Emmitt Carden went 3-for-3 with two runs.
Union Pines hosts East Montgomery Thursday at 7 p.m.
Pine Forest 12, Overhills 3
The Jaguars fell at Pine Forest in a non-conference game Monday night. Overhills (0-2) hosts Harnett Central Thursday at 6 p.m.

The Lady Jaguars lost at Pine Forest Monday night. Overhills (0-2) will host Harnett Central Thursday at 6 p.m.
Cape Fear Valley Conference match
at Sanford Golf Course
Union Pines won a five-school meet, carding 331 as a team, in the first play of the CFVC golf season on Monday.
Southern Lee finished second at 341. Overhills (350), Western Harnett (380) and Gray's Creek (408) completed the standings. Ben Chrysler of Union Pines was the medalist shooting a 75.
Harnett Central 3, Southern Lee 2
In the opening match for both squads, the Lady Trojans won at Southern Lee Monday night.
Southern Lee (0-1) starts Cape Fear Valley play Friday at Western Harnett at 4:30 p.m. Harnett Central (1-0) plays at Western Harnett tonight at 6 p.m.
Middle Creek 7, Lee County 0
The Lady Mustangs (1-1, 1-1) defeated visiting Lee County as the Lady Yellow Jackets (0-1, 0-1) started their season and Tri-Nine schedule Monday night.
Lee County hosts Riverside for its first home match Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Trinity Academy 2, Lee Christian 1
In its season opener and its first Carolina Christian Conference match, Lee Christian was edged on the road at Trinity Academy (1-0, 1-0) Monday afternoon.
The Lady Falcons (0-1, 0-1) had their match postponed yesterday and will play at Jordan-Matthews Friday at 6 p.m.
Overhills 1, Triton 0
The Lady Jaguars (1-0-1) scored in the first half and it was enough to beat visiting Triton (1-1) Monday night.
Triton was scheduled to play C.B. Aycock last night and will visit Southern Wayne Friday for a 6 p.m. kick. Overhills is hosting Jack Britt tonight at 7 p.m.
Pinecrest 8, Richmond 0
The Lady Patriots (1-0-1, 1-0-0) opened their Southeastern Conference season with a rout at Richmond (1-2, 0-1). Pinecrest hosts Hoke County tonight at 7 p.m.
Northwood 5, Cedar Ridge 3
Northwood (1-1, 1-0) beat visiting Cedar Ridge for a Carolina 12 win Monday night. The Lady Chargers play at Northern Durham tonight at 7 p.m.
North Rowan 1, North Moore 0
North Rowan (2-0, 2-0) edged visiting North Moore (0-1, 0-1) in a Yadkin Valley match Monday night. North Moore travels to play South Davidson tonight at 6:30 p.m.
East Montgomery 5, Chatham Central 0
East Montgomery (1-0, 1-0) rolled to a win at Chatham Central (0-1, 0-1) in the opener for both Monday night. The Lady Bears play at Gray Stone Day today at 4:30 p.m.
Southern Lee 8, Westover 1
The Cavaliers (2-1, 2-0) swept the six singles matches against the visiting Wolverines for a Cape Fear Valley victory Monday.
Luke Foushee, Jake Garner, Severyn Schaller, Jay Randolph and Payton Wolf won their matches. Noe Mexicano won by forfeit in singles, then teamed with Ben Long to get a doubles win.
The Cavaliers play at Union Pines today at 4 p.m.
