Lady Vikings top Lee County, more area scores

The Cape Fear Valley Conference has changed from last school year to this young one, but Union Pines' women's tennis team is still the defending champ and the Lady Vikings started their campaign to stay in that spot with an 8-1 win at Lee County Monday afternoon.

The Lady Vikings swept the six singles matches, led by No. 1 player Mary Beth Jackson winning 6-0, 6-0. It's Jackson's 33rd career win as a Lady Viking.

Varsity newcomers Julianne Hall, at No. 2 singles, then Sarah Nicholson, Abbey Downing and Hailey Trudeau in doubles, got their first UP varsity wins.

The Lady Jacket No. 1 doubles team, Sydney Blum and Mason Sanders, won 8-2 for Lee County's one point.

Lee County (0-2, 0-1) played Gray's Creek yesterday in Sanford. The Lady Jackets will play at Terry Sanford, the other new member of the CFVC, at 4:30 p.m. next Tuesday.

Union Pines (1-0, 1-0) played at Western Harnett yesterday and is set to host Southern Lee at 4:30 p.m. today.

Union Pines d. Richmond County 28-26, 25-11, 25-9

The Lady Vikings improved to 3-1 with a sweep at Richmond Monday evening. Tiffany Hicks led UP with 11 kills and Stephanie Johnson had seven blocks.

Union Pines moved into league play last night at Westover. The Lady Vikings will host Terry Sanford in a CFVC match at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Pinecrest d. Overhills 25-20, 25-19, 25-20

Pinecrest (2-2) swept visiting Overhills (3-1) Monday evening. Pinecrest plays at Terry Sanford at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Overhills played South View last night in the first Mid-South Athletic Conference match for the Lady Jaguars. The Lady Jaguars will play at Cape Fear at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Jordan-Matthews d. Chatham Central 25-20, 26-24, 25-14

The Lady Jets (1-2) swept county-rival Chatham Central (1-2) Monday night in Siler City. Jordan-Matthews hosts West Montgomery at 6 p.m. this evening while Chatham Central visits Lee County today for a 5:30 p.m. start.

Middle Creek d. Triton 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 24-26, 15-8

The Lady Mustangs pulled out the tiebreaker set to edge Triton in Erwin Monday night. Barbara Godwin led Triton with 10 kills and Cassidy Hayes added eight kills.

The Lady Hawks (0-1) host Harnett Central at 5:30 p.m. today.


Union Pines 1, Village Christian 1

Rafael Pastrana's penalty kick tied the match for the Vikings late in the second half and Union Pines wound up drawing at Village Christian (1-1-2) Monday. It is Pastrana's third goal in three matches on the season.

The Vikings (2-0-1) play at Richmond at 7 p.m. tonight.

Overhills 3, Western Harnett 2

After a 3-3 draw between the Jaguars and Eagles last week, the Jaguars edged Western Harnett Monday night. Western Harnett (0-2-1) played at Harnett Central last night and will play at Pine Forest at 6 p.m. Thursday. Overhills (1-1-1) has its first Mid-South Athletic match this evening, hosting South View at 6 p.m.

Pinecrest 5, Harnett Central 0

The Patriots (2-0) cruised to a win at Harnett Central (1-1) Monday night. Pinecrest plays at Leesville Road at 6:30 p.m. this evening. Harnett Central faced Western Harnett last night and will play at Middle Creek at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

North Moore 8, Thomasville 0

The Mustangs (1-0-1) routed visiting Thomasville Monday night. North Moore goes into Yadkin Valley play hosting South Stanly tonight at 6:30 p.m.


Chapel Hill 8, Northwood 1

Northwood's top singles player, Hannah Holloway, won in a tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0, but Chapel Hill took the rest of the match in a Big Eight Conference match in Pittsboro Monday. The Lady Chargers (1-1, 0-1) play at Cardinal Gibbons at 4:30 p.m. today.

Jordan-Matthews 8, Providence Grove 1

The Lady Jets (1-1) won at Providence Grove Monday. Jordan-Matthews starts Mid-State play today hosting Reidsville at 4:30 p.m.
