Southern Lee tames Mustangs, 9-1
Southern Lee hit the ball just fine in its 9-1 victory over North Moore on the first night of the 2014 Chatlee Easter Invitational Thursday night.
The Cavaliers put runs up on the board, though, whether they were getting hits or not.
With aggressive, or a little fortunate, base running, along with taking advantage of seven walks and six Mustang errors, Southern Lee (13-5, 7-2 Cape Fear Valley) took the lead early and put the game out of reach late. Three Cavalier pitchers, Christian Wenger, Ben Gaster and Josh Taylor, kept the Mustangs (10-7, 7-3 Yadkin Valley) quiet most of the night.
After Wenger tossed an easy three-up, three-down top of the first, in the second spot of the Cavalier batting order he reached base thanks to a throwing error from shortstop.
Courtesy-runner Owen Bond stole second, then stole third and an errant throw into left field allowed Bond to scramble up and score.
Mustang starting pitcher freshman Trey Wood held the Cavs from there in the first, then worked around a one-out error in the second.
The Cavaliers got going again in the third, taking advantage of North Moore mistakes again. Wenger reached on an error and moved around the bases on two wild pitches before scoring on Ethan Helsman's single. With Cavs on the corners, Chris McLean got caught between first and second but the rundown let Maxx Taylor sprint down the line from third and score for a 3-0 Cavalier lead.
Wenger pitched two shutout innings, followed by three more by Gaster (3-1). Taylor faced a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the sixth but held the Mustangs to one run, for a 6-1 Cavalier lead which became a 9-1 score in the bottom of the sixth, then had no problem in the seventh.
A two-out, two-RBI double by Ryan Holmes was the key hit in the Southern Lee fifth.
Helsman finished a 4 for 4 game at the plate, with all four being singles, with an RBI single making it 7-1 in the sixth. Conner Showalter had an RBI single and Marcos Collazo got an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Helsman had two runs and two RBI along with the four hits.
Kirby Lambert, North Moore's third-spot hitter, went 2 for 4. Josh Wallace drew a bases-loaded walk for an RBI in the sixth.
The Chatlee Easter Invitational continues Friday with doubleheaders at Union Pines and Southern Lee. At Cavalier Stadium, North Moore will play Surry Central at 4 p.m. followed by Western Harnett vs. Southern Lee at 7 p.m.
