Big turnaround gives O'Neal CFIC win

SOUTHERN PINES - O'Neal got goals from Mary Dixon and Hannah Sullivan five minutes apart in the first half, then survived playing with 10 players for the final stretch of the second half, to avenge an earlier loss to Fayetteville Academy with a 2-1 victory Tuesday afternoon at Mauser Field.

Fayetteville Academy (11-4, 5-2) topped the Lady Falcons 6-0 on March 14 in their first Cape Fear Independent Conference match of the season. O'Neal (5-6-1, 3-4-0) is 4-1-0 in its last five matches.

Fayetteville Academy started strong and Kelly Post scored a goal in the sixth minute.

In the 30th minute, Dixon played a ball up to Sullivan, who then turned and played a through ball back to Dixon making a run up the middle of the field. Dixon took the ball down on the breakaway and slotted a shot past the goalkeeper.

Five minutes later, Sullivan stole a bad pass by Fayetteville Academy's defense and capitalized with a goal for a 2-1 O'Neal lead.

In the second half, the game continued to be a back and forth contest with scoring chances for both sides. About midway through the half, Madelyn Davis picked up her second yellow card for a hard tackle stopping a Fayetteville Academy counterattack. Down a man, O'Neal hung on led by goalkeeper Alex Quevedo making some incredible saves. Quevedo finished with 12 saves.

O'Neal hosts Village Christian today at 4:45 p.m. and will finish its regular season hosting Lee Christian on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
