Area scores: Cavaliers, Terry Sanford stay even in CFVC soccer race

Southern Lee 5, Westover 0

The Cavaliers (14-0-2, 8-0-1) ran their winning streak to six matches and kept pace with Terry Sanford in a first-place tie atop the Cape Fear Valley Conference Wednesday night at Westover (5-7, 2-6).

Southern Lee hosted Union Pines last night and will host Jordan-Matthews at 7 p.m. tonight.

The Cavaliers have rescheduled their MVP Night to Oct. 16 and a home match versus Lee County. The senior Cavalier players will honor mentors in their lives, from athletics to academics and more, during a presentation at halftime.


Terry Sanford 4, Lee County 2

Terry Sanford (16-1-1, 8-0-1) led 1-0 at halftime and held on for a CFVC win at Lee County (8-6-1, 5-4-1) on Wednesday night.

Ivan Mireles and Tyler Underwood scored one goal each for the Yellow Jackets and Michael Carter had an assist.

The Yellow Jackets had won four straight before facing Terry Sanford and are in third place in the CFVC with two regular-season matches remaining. Lee County will host its senior night versus Westover at 7 p.m. Monday.


Union Pines 9, Douglas Byrd 0

The Vikings (6-7-3, 3-6-1) routed visiting Douglas Byrd in a Cape Fear Valley match Wednesday night. The Vikings played at Southern Lee last night and will play at Gray's Creek at 7 p.m. Monday.


Carrboro 3, Jordan-Matthews 2

Carrboro (9-4-2, 7-0-0) remained atop the Mid-State Conference with its second one-goal win versus the Jets (10-5-1, 4-2-1) this season. The Jets play at Southern Lee at 7 p.m. Friday.


Northwood 4, J.F. Webb 1

Northwood rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to win a Big Eight match at J.F. Webb (2-11-5, 0-9-1) on Wednesday. The Chargers (8-6, 5-4) will host Cedar Ridge at 7 p.m. Monday.


Corinth Holders 3, Western Harnett 0

Corinth Holders (11-3-1, 4-1-0) led 2-0 at halftime and prevailed in a Two Rivers match at Western Harnett on Wednesday. The Eagles (2-10-2, 1-4-0) played at Cleveland last night and will play at Smithfield-Selma at 6 p.m. Monday.


Pine Forest 6, Overhills 2

Pine Forest (15-2, 10-1) remained atop the Mid-South Athletic standings with a win at Overhills Wednesday night. The Jaguars (6-7-2, 5-4-1) have two regular-season matches to play, at E.E. Smith at 6 p.m. Monday then home against Jack Britt at 7 p.m. Wednesday.


South Johnston 3, Triton 2

Triton (3-11-1, 0-5-0) led 2-1 at halftime but couldn't hold onto the lead in a Two Rivers match at South Johnston (8-4-1, 3-2-0) Wednesday night. South Johnston sweeps the Hawks for the season.

Bailey Tart and Houston Hamilton scored a goal each for the Hawks.

Triton played at Corinth Holders last night and will host Cleveland at 6 p.m. Monday.


Pinecrest 9, Purnell Swett 0

The Patriots(12-1-2, 7-1-0) won via mercy rule in a Southeastern Conference match at Purnell Swett Wednesday.

Pinecrest leads the SEC by a 1.5 games over Lumberton. The Patriots will play at Richmond County at 7 p.m. Monday.

Girls - Pinecrest 21, Lumberton 57, Richmond 60

The Lady Patriots remained perfect in Southeastern Conference meets winning at Britt Park in Lumberton on Wednesday. The SEC Championship is set for Oct. 15 at Carolina Horse Park in Hoke County.
