Lady Bears advance in YVC Tournament

Girls basketball

Chatham Central 54, North Moore 50

Despite a North Moore sweep over the Lady Bears in the regular season, No. 4-seeded Chatham Central (11-12) edged visiting No. 5 North Moore (13-11) in a Yadkin Valley Conference Tournament first round game Monday night.

North Moore led 22-20 at halftime before Chatham Central took a 35-30 lead going to the fourth period and a 50-36 lead in the final quarter. The Lady Mustangs rallied back within a 52-50 Lady Bear edge with 0:15 left.

Jordan Culberson led the Lady Bears with 15 points. Katelyn Moody added 13 points and Ashley Hudson had 12 points.

Chatham Central moves on to face No. 1 South Davidson, which went 16-0 in the YVC regular season, this evening in a semifinal at East Montgomery at 6 p.m.

Jordan-Matthews 61, Providence Grove 47

Coming off a loss to close the regular season, the Lady Jets (22-3) rolled past Providence Grove (7-16) in a Mid-State Conference Tournament first round game in Siler City Monday night.

Senior forward Mylia Garner paced Jordan-Matthews with 26 points. Center Erin Bristow added 12 points.

Hope Foxx led Providence Grove with 11 points.

Jordan-Matthews advances to a semifinal against Graham on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Bartlett Yancey. The Lady Jets and Graham split in the regular season.


Douglas Byrd 52, Union Pines 47

No. 6-seeded Douglas Byrd (4-18) upset No. 3 Union Pines (12-12) in the first round of the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament at Union Pines Monday night.

Lexie Coxe led the Lady Vikings with 11 points. Tiffany Hicks had nine points and 11 rebounds.

Union Pines beat Douglas Byrd in both regular-season meetings.

In this evening's semifinals at Overhills, Douglas Byrd plays Southern Lee at 6 p.m. followed by Westover against top-seeded Overhills at 7:30 p.m.

Harnett Central 58, Garner 29

Harnett Central (20-4) jumped out to a 22-6 lead through one quarter and kept rolling for its third win over Garner this season in the first round of the Greater Neuse River Conference Tournament at East Wake.

DeAnneisha Jackson led the Lady Trojans with 18 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and four assists. Jalisia Campbell added 12 points, eight boards and four assists.

No. 3 Harnett Central plays at No. 2 East Wake tonight at 5:30 p.m. East Wake swept Harnett Central in the regular season.

Triton 44, North Lenoir 37

No. 2-seeded Triton was tied, 18-18, with visiting No. 7 North Lenoir before taking a 33-27 lead going to the fourth quarter and advancing through the first round of the Eastern Carolina Conference Tournament Monday night.

Jamecia McNair led Triton (12-12) with 11 points. Keitora Smith had nine points and 14 rebounds.

Triton will host No. 3 C.B. Aycock in a semifinal tonight at 6 p.m. Triton and C.B. Aycock split in the regular season.

Boys basketball

Jordan-Matthews 67, Reidsville 54

Clashing for the third time in three games, and in a span of six days, the Jets won the rubber match which was also a first round game in the Mid-State Conference Tournament in Siler City Monday night.

Center Derek Hamilton led the Jets (19-6) with 16 points. Casey Golden scored 15 points and Jaleel Dunn scored 14.

Rashard Galloway led the Rams with 20 points.

Jordan-Matthews takes on top-seeded Cummings in a semifinal tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Bartlett Yancey.

Pinecrest 61, Purnell Swett 48

Host and No. 3-seed Pinecrest (15-8) led 25-24 at the half before pulling away to get past No. 6 Purnell Swett (3-19) in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament Monday night.

The Patriots advance to play at No. 2 Richmond tonight at 7:30 p.m. The Raiders won both contests with the Patriots in the regular season.
