Community edges Crusaders in first round of states

Community Christian 74, Grace Christian 73

Conference mate Community Christian got 1-of-2 free throws with three seconds left for the winning point in an NCISAA 1A State Tournament first round game Tuesday night in Wilson.

Grace senior point guard Mark Riches made a three-pointer to tie the game, 73-73, with 0:33 left. The Crusaders got the rebound off the following missed free throw and tried to call a timeout but the clock expired.

B.J. Harrison led the No. 9-seeded Crusaders (19-11) with 30 points. Zach Boggs had 22 points and Riches scored 15 points.

Jamie Braswell led No. 8 Community with 22 points.

Overhills 91, Union Pines 71

No. 3-seeded Overhills (16-7) rolled past No. 6 Union Pines (5-20) in a first round Cape Fear Valley Tournament game at Overhills Tuesday night.

Thursday night’s CFVC semis, hosted at Westover, will be Overhills vs. Southern Lee at 6 p.m. and Douglas Byrd vs. Westover at 7:30 p.m.

Albemarle 67, Chatham Central 36

No. 2-seeded Albemarle (19-2) cruised past visiting No. 7 Chatham Central in the first round of the Yadkin Valley Conference Tournament Tuesday night. Albemarle went 3-0 against the Bears this season.

T’kyle Williams led the Bulldogs with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Chatham Central finishes its season 7-15 overall.

Southeast Raleigh 68, Harnett Central 66

No. 3-seeded Southeast Raleigh edged No. 6 Harnett Central in a Greater Neuse River Conference Tournament first round game. Southeast Raleigh led 33-23 at halftime.

Don Singletary led Harnett Central with 17 points. Tre Rogers had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Hunter Baker had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Trojans.

Southeast Raleigh (14-8) won the two regular season meetings with the Trojans by 19 and 28 points.

Harnett Central ends the season 9-15 overall.

Wayne Country Day 83, Cape Fear Christian 74

No. 7 Wayne Country Day beat visiting Cape Fear Christian, the No. 10 seed, in the first round of the NCISAA 1A State Tournament Tuesday night. Cape Fear Christian ends the season with a 14-9 record.

Westchester Country Day 59, O’Neal 38

No. 6-seeded Westchester Country Day (18-10) topped No. 11 O’Neal in the first round of the NCISAA 2A State Tournament Tuesday in High Point.

The Falcons (13-14) made the state tournament after an upset run to the Cape Fear Independent Conference Tournament title last week.

Girls basketball

Hickory Christian 40, Cape Fear Christian 29

Host Hickory Christian (12-14), the No. 8 seed, jumped out to a 14-8 lead after one quarter and went on to beat No. 9 Cape Fear Christian in the first round of the NCISAA 1A State Tournament Tuesday night.

Hannah Brannon led the Lady Eagles with 12 points and Madison Pentony added eight points for CFCA.

The Lady Eagles finish the season 14-7.
