Apex bounces Jackets from Tri-9 tournament
Apex 80, Lee County 53
Top-seeded Apex (18-8) beat the Yellow Jackets (13-13) for the third time in three meetings this season in a Tri-Nine Tournament semifinal played at Holly Springs Wednesday night.
The No. 4 Jackets were within a 27-21 Cougar lead at halftime before Apex scored 30 points in the third quarter taking a 57-39 lead. Guard T.J. Evans led the Cougars with 29 points. Apex and Green Hope will play in the final Friday night at Holly Springs.
Lee County moves on to the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament. The bracket will be announced Saturday and the first round is set for Monday.
Northwood 42, South Granville 39
Charger senior Adam Leviner made a three-pointer with 0:04 remaining to break a 39-39 tie and send Northwood (16-9) into the Carolina 12 Tournament final on Wednesday night in Pittsboro.
The No. 2 Chargers and No. 3 Vikings (16-10) were tied at 27-27 going to the fourth period. South Granville led 37-32 before the Chargers fought back to a 37-37 score.
Ti Pinnix led the Chargers with 14 points and Kadarus Rone added 12 points.
Northwood will host top-seeded Carrboro (20-3) in the final Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Richmond 67, Pinecrest 51
No. 2-seeded Richmond (18-7) beat visiting No. 3 Pinecrest (15-9) in a Southeastern Conference semifinal Wednesday night. The Raiders advance to play Hoke County in Friday night's SEC final.
Jordan Richardson led Richmond with 21 points. Adam Cummings led the Patriots with 12 points and Jvyhoun Justice added 10 points.
The Patriots cut a 16-point Raider lead to as close as six midway through the fourth quarter but didn't get closer.
The Patriots will be in the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament.
Cummings 67, Jordan-Matthews 50
Top-seeded Cummings (20-3) got out to a 31-18 halftime lead and advanced past the Jets (19-7) in a Mid-State Tournament semifinal at Bartlett Yancey Wednesday night.
Jordan-Matthews moves on to a spot in the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament.
Northwood 53, Carrboro 49
No. 1 Northwood (21-4) held off No. 4 Carrboro in a Carolina 12 semifinal at Pittsboro Wednesday night.
Northwood led 48-33 going to the fourth period before a late Carrboro rally.
Shontai Totten led the Lady Chargers with 14 points. Jasmine Atkins had 13 points and Alexis Brower had 10 points. Diamond Tyson led Carrboro with 19 points.
Northwood will host No. 3 Granville Central in the tournament final Friday at 6 p.m. The Lady Chargers beat Granville Central 61-26 in their regular season finale.
Westover 68, Overhills 66 - OT
No. 4 Westover (16-9) upset host and No. 1 Overhills (17-6), giving the Lady Jaguars their first loss in CFVC play this season, in a Cape Fear Valley Conference semifinal Wednesday night.
Westover rallied from a 28-16 halftime deficit. Nekyia Baptiste scored 22 points and Kylah Saylon scored 21 for Westover.
No. 4 Westover will host No. 6 Douglas Byrd in the CFVC final Friday at 6 p.m.
South Davidson 53, Chatham Central 33
Top-seeded South Davidson (22-2) advanced through the Yadkin Valley Tournament semis, jumping out to a 29-9 lead by the half and beating No. 4 Chatham Central Wednesday night at East Montgomery.
Madison Beeson led South Davidson with 16 points. South Davidson is 18-0 in YVC play this season.
The Lady Bears (11-13) move on to the NCHSAA 1A State Tournament starting Monday.
Triton 51, C.B. Aycock 40
No. 2 Triton (13-12) moved into the Eastern Carolina Conference final with a win over visiting C.B. Aycock Wednesday night.
Mallary Caroway had 13 points, seven rebounds and six steals for Triton and Octavia Hart had 13 points, four steals and three assists. Triton totaled 16 steals as a team.
Triton will play at No. 1 Eastern Wayne in the final Friday at 6 p.m.
East Wake 55, Harnett Central 37
No. 2 East Wake (18-6) eliminated No. 3 Harnett Central, going to 3-0 this season over the Lady Trojans, in a Greater Neuse River Tournament semifinal Wednesday night.
Kianna Wynn led East Wake with 19 points. DeAnneisha Jackson led Harnett Central with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Trojans (20-5) will be in the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament which starts Monday.
