Patriots, Vikings open up on the diamonds

Pinecrest 16, Union Pines 6

In the season opener for the Vikings and host Patriots, the Vikings led 4-3 in the third inning before Pinecrest won via mercy rule in five innings Wednesday night.

The Patriots scored a run in the bottom of the third, then 10 runs in the fourth for a 14-4 lead. Aaron Reimer got the win on the mound for the Patriots.

Pinecrest (1-0) plays at Southern Lee tonight at 7 p.m. Union Pines (0-1) hosts Southwestern Randolph this evening at 6 p.m.


Pinecrest 9, Union Pines 8

Union Pines and Pinecrest traded seventh-inning rallies with the Lady Patriots taking the county rivalry game in Southern Pines Wednesday.

Bri Embler's two-run double plated the tying and winning runs for the Lady Patriots. Union Pines trailed 7-5 before scoring three runs in the top of the seventh.

Pinecrest (1-0) plays next at Union Pines (0-1) on Tuesday. The Lady Vikings played East Montgomery yesterday.

John Dangerfield won twice taking his Viking career record to 112-18, No. 21 all-time in Union Pines' history. Ben Williams won his first two career matches. Union Pines (1-0) played at Overhills yesterday and will host Gray's Creek Monday at 4 p.m. The Vikings are the defending Cape Fear Valley champs and went 17-1 last season.
