Terry Sanford wins CFVC swimming crowns
Terry Sanford, the defending swimming champs of the 4A Mid-South Conference, swept the two conference team titles in its new home, the Cape Fear Valley Conference at the conference championship meet at Campbell University Thursday night.
The Bulldogs prevailed with 322 points over runner-up Lee County at 257 points. The Yellow Jackets picked a fine time for one of their best meets of the 2013-14 season, finishing second, their highest place in a meet, for the second time this season.
Union Pines, Southern Lee, Gray's Creek and Westover completed the boys team standings.
On the ladies side, Terry Sanford totaled 339 points to outpace Union Pines at 238 points. The Viking teams were the CFVC's defending champs. Lee County was third with 198 points. Southern Lee, Westover and Gray's Creek completed the girls team scores.
The Yellow Jackets and Cavaliers had multiple individual champs to celebrate.
Lee County senior Morgan Vogelsang starred individually and for her Lady Yellow Jacket relay teams - along with Savannah Cabe, Kim Krause and Shannon Allen in the 200-yard and 400 freestyle relays.
Vogelsang won the first of four conference titles she won or helped in by dominating the 100-yard freestyle. Vogelsang won in 57.18 and Lily Majuri of Union Pines finished second in 1:04.76.
As the anchor leg for Lee County's 200-yard freestyle relay, Vogelsang made up a little more than four seconds on the rest of the final legs to go from trailing Terry Sanford and Union Pines starting the fourth leg to a Yellow Jacket victory, edging Terry Sanford's team by just under three tenths of a second.
Vogelsang won her second individual title in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:14.60 and winning by a wide margin.
A few minutes later, she turned in another last-leg relay comeback in the 400 free relay. Lee County trailed Terry Sanford by a little more than a quarter of the pool when Vogelsang dove in. She had gained the lead by the last turn and pulled away in the last 25 yards.
For the Jackets, senior Phillip Morie won the 100 freestyle title, topping teammate Michael Russell. Morie won in 51.88 and Russell finished in 1:00.21.
The Yellow Jacket 200 freestyle relay team of Russell, Morie, Dalton Cox and Austin Vogelsang won in a time of 1:43.49, edging out Terry Sanford.
Southern Lee had two two-time conference champs.
Saara Lindbohm, an exchange student from Finland, continued her dominant season winning the 200 individual medley, in 2:26.16, then the 500 freestyle in 5:48.18, winning by 38 seconds.
Eli Brightbill won two conference championships, in the 200 individual medley in 2:14.57 and the 500 free in 5:35.96, by a 27-second gap.
Complete event results will be in Saturday's Herald.
