Falcon boys, Lady Mustangs run to wins
O'Neal's cross country teams competed at North Moore High School on Wednesday with the Falcons winning the boys' meet and the Lady Falcons finishing second.
North Moore won the girls' meet and placed second in the boys' meet in the four-school meet including Albemarle and Trinity.
The teams ran a tough race in the heat and humidity. The O'Neal boys finished with 27 points to 31 for North Moore. Leading the Falcons was freshman Jake Hendricks who was second in a time of 21:00. Freshman John Grimm finished third in 21:07. Sophomore Josh Russell was sixth in 21:38. Completing the team score was senior Andy Smetana (7th/22:50) and seventh-grader James Taylor (9th/23:18).
Senior Aleksandra Majka led the Lady Falcons by finishing fifth in 27:15 and sophomore Julia Huesa was sixth in 27:30. Freshman Destiny Gibson (8th/28:46), senior Allison Johnson (12th/29:49) and freshman Margaux Winter (15th/31:43) made up the Lady Falcon team score.
The Lady Mustangs finished ahead of O'Neal, 30-42, to win. North Moore sophomore Lauren Deview won in 23:12.
North Moore junior Tristin Mackey won the boys' race in 20:26.
O'Neal will host its next meet on Wednesday at Reservoir Park in Southern Pines.
North Moore will host a five-squad Yadkin Valley meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Chatham Central, South Davidson, West Montgomery and East Montgomery will visit the Mustangs.
