Sports briefs: Fall ball getting set at Deep River Northview

Registration for the fall baseball/softball season is underway at Deep River Northview Optimist Park. Registration is available online through and will be held at the park, at Field 3, on the following dates: Saturdays, Aug. 2, 9 and 16 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. each day and Fridays, Aug. 8 and 15 from 6-8 p.m. each evening. The last day for registration will be Aug. 18. Anyone registering after this date will be assessed a $20 late fee and may be placed on a waiting list.

Leagues being offered are 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-15 baseball and 6-8, 9-12 and 13-15 softball. Registration fee is $45 for 5-6 baseball and $50 for all other leagues. Each child will be required to purchase 15 $2 raffle tickets, to then be sold to recover the money, for fundraising for a cash drawing. This is being done in lieu of a fall feed.

Yellow Jackets prepping for fall sports

Lee County High School's first day of practice by sport is: football at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, cross country at 7 a.m. Friday, volleyball at 8 a.m. Friday, soccer at 9 a.m. Friday and tennis at 2 p.m. on Aug. 4.

Lee County High School is asking student-athletes, especially rising freshmen, to come out and get their paperwork from the school. They must have a current physical and the NCHSAA concussion forms completed in order to practice on Aug. 1.

Southern Lee tennis practice starting

Southern Lee High School's girls tennis practices will start at 8 a.m. on Thursday at the Cavalier tennis courts. Players need to have a current physical. Physical forms can be picked up at the school office.

Lee County tennis practice starting

Lee County High School's girls tennis tryouts will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at the school's courts. The girls need to bring their own racket and a water bottle is recommended.

Lee County soccer tryouts

Lee County High School soccer tryouts will start from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Friday. Players must bring a current physical to try out. For more information, please call head coach Brad Wicker at (919) 889-8552.

Western Harnett football tryouts

Western Harnett High School varsity football tryouts will start at 8 a.m. Friday. JV football tryouts will start at 11 a.m. Friday. All players must attend and must have an updated physical.

Senior hoops teams recruiting new players

Lee County is looking for a few good men to join its three senior basketball teams. Registration has to be in July. The North Carolina Senior Games State Basketball Tournament will be held on Oct. 27 at East Carolina University in Greenville.

The three local teams are age 60-64, 65-69 and 70-and-older. Play is half-court using one basket. Competion is 3-on-3. Participants must be residents of North Carolina. Practice starts Monday evening at 7 p.m. Come join us for some great fellowship!

Dance lessons

Lee County Parks and Recreation is offering dance lessons for kids ages 3 and up. Registration is ongoing at the Parks and Recreation Office, 2303 Tramway Road, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Limited space is available. For details, please call (919) 775-2107 ext. 207.

Northwood Softball Skills Clinic

The Northwood Lady Chargers will conduct their second annual softball clinic on Saturday at the Northwood softball complex in Pittsboro. The clinic is open to ages 7-14 with a 7-10 year-old session from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and ages 11-14 from 2-5:30 p.m.

Coaches will include Lady Charger head coach Butch Edenfield and assistant coaches Rich Droese and Gary Blakenship along with current and former Northwood players and current and former travel ball coaches.

Campers will learn offensive and defensive drills and techniques; working on swing mechanics, bunting, base running, throwing mechanics, fielding, outfield skills and situational play.

Sanford Men's Golf Association events

The next Sanford Men's Golf Association event will be Tough Day Flighted Skins on Aug. 9. Deadline for this event is Aug. 7.

The Annual Match Play is set for Aug. 16-17. Cost will be $50 for members and $60 for non-members of the course.

The Cape Fear Cup Qualifier is set for Aug. 15 and will be $35. The Cape Fear Cup, a Ryder Cup-style match-play tournament between Lee County and Harnett County, is scheduled for Sept. 20-21 at Chicora Golf Club in Dunn.
