Lee County All-Stars win sectional title
The Lee County Parks and Recreation 14U Boys All-Star team had a 3-0 weekend and advanced to the state championship tournament by winning the Western Sectional Basketball Championship last weekend at the Bettie Rae Thomas Recreation Center in Charlotte. The State Championship Tournament is this weekend in Havelock.
Lee County opened the tournament facing the Charlotte Bobcats. Lee County broke out to a 10-0 lead and held most of that lead the rest of the game, finishing with a 47-39 victory.
Larry McLeod led Lee County with 12 points and nine rebounds. Nicholas Grubb had 12 points and five boards and Colby Woodard had nine points and 10 rebounds.
In the semifinals, Lee County won a hard-fought game 44-43 over the Burlington All-Stars. Burlington had a chance to win the game with two seconds left but 6-foot-6 Gabe Bryant altered the shot and it came up short. Jory Perkins led Lee with 13 points. McLeod had 11 points and nine rebounds.
The championship game was a rematch as Burlington advanced through the consolation bracket. Lee County had strong performances on the boards and in transition to win 57-46.
Woodard led Lee with 21 points and McLeod totaled 19 points, 23 rebounds and two slam dunks. Lee County had good performances throughout the tournament from guards Tristan Marsh, Evan Wells, Caleb Thomas, Dylan Cox and Trevor Wicker. The team got excellent defensive games from Will Scott and Isaiah Monroe.
