Wicker, Radley share lead at Brick Capital Classic
David Wicker and Jack Radley both carded four-under par rounds of 67 to be co-leaders after the first round of the 37th Annual Brick Capital Classic at Sanford Municipal Golf Course Saturday.
Play in the second and final round starts today at 8:30 a.m. with the leading groups teeing off ending at 2 p.m.
Wicker and Radley, both of Sanford, played in Saturday’s morning shotgun group, as did the next two golfers on the leaderboard, Duff Meyer and Paul Jett, who shot three-under 68s. Brad McDougald shot the low round of the afternoon with a 69. Those were the five players under par.
The morning golfers played through a 45-minute rainstorm. The day as a whole was unseasonably springlike for late June. The rain did play a role though.
“I don’t know if a single player was prepared for it,” said Sanford Golf Course’s PGA Professional David Von Canon.Rain is somewhat of a tradition with the Brick Capital Classic, though last June a big storm came in the late night and early morning before the first round.
About 160 golfers turned out for the Classic, which is part-competitive and part-social weekend for golfers who enjoy Sanford Golf Course plenty of other weekends during the year.
Spence Gilmore won closest to the pin on No. 14 and, with his first shot of the morning, Ron Randolph won closest to the pin sticking it to five inches of the cup on No. 2.
Gerald Harrington, Matthew Rhodes and senior-division leader James Doyle all shot even-par 71s. Also in the senior division, Odell Brady shot 74 and Paul Gay shot 76.
