Stoneybrook races mean spring in the Sandhills

Apr. 02, 2014 @ 04:58 AM

With the thunder of hooves from the country’s fastest race horses mere feet from an estimated 10,000 spectators, the 63rd running of the annual Stoneybrook Steeplechase will be held Saturday at the Carolina Horse Park in Raeford. As the kick-off social event of the spring season in the Sandhills area, “Stoneybrook” claims a long and vibrant history and it continues to thrill its audience each year.

The Stoneybrook Steeplechase is a fun-filled day with activities for all ages from the five flat and steeplechase races on the card — worth tens of thousands in prize money — to a full vendor area and Kid Zone to the famous hat and tailgating contests and the morning 5K and 1K foot races.

“Stoneybrook always promises a great day in the country for families, young people and veteran horse racing enthusiasts alike,” said Stoneybrook Race Committee Chairman Marshall Glass.

“As the largest sporting event in the region, there is no other event like it that offers such a thrilling mix of action, speed, history and family activities. Whether you are enjoying a bloody mary in the VIP Turf Club, displaying a sky-high bedecked race hat, or cheering on your favorite mount from your truck bed in the infield tailgating, you are sure to have an experience like none other at the Stoneybrook Steeplechase,” Glass said.

Events begin at 9 a.m. with the Run for the Ribbons 5K race benefitting the FirstHealth Cancer CARE Fund. General admission gates open at 9:30 a.m. Post time for the running of the steeplechase races is 1:30 p.m.

According to race director Toby Edwards about 40 horses and 12 jockeys, including recent champions Danny Hodgson, Ross Geraghty and Paddy Young will compete in the steeplechase races, coming from as far away as Nashville and Baltimore. Hall of Fame trainers Jonathan Sheppard and Janet Elliot will also be at this year’s competition.

Tickets may be purchased at Harris Teeter, online at www.stoneybrooksteeplechase.com or by calling Carolina Horse Park at 910-875-2074. Tickets are also available at the gate on race day. Admission is free for children 12 and under.
