Red Cross still seeking U.S. Open volunteers
The American Red Cross is sponsoring three concession areas at the U.S. Open championships this week and next at Pinehurst No. 2 – and they’re looking for volunteers.
Two shifts are available daily at the men’s U.S. Open, which begins today, and the women’s event, which begins next week. Shifts are 5:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Those who volunteer get access to the golf venue and all the spectator activities, plus free parking and one free meal.
“There is no question that its impact in Lee and counties like ours is essential when disasters occur - and small or large, they very often do,” said volunteer Jay Calendine.
“Also, the widely-held perception that the Red Cross is a government agency is not true; it employs a volunteer force and relies on private donations. Lee County's convenient distance to the Open and its own recent receipt of relief by Red Cross volunteers and resources would seem to be motivations to volunteer for this effort in Pinehurst. I just think many Lee County residents don't know they have this chance to help," Calendine said.
Volunteers must be 18 or older. For more information, or to volunteer, go to www.RedCross.org/usopenvolunteers.
