IN THE DRAFT: Getting ready, getting together, for Daytona
Well, surprise, surprise! I can see it in your eyes! No, it's not February. Close, but not quite yet.
With all of the changes that have taken place in NASCAR during the offseason I think I need to start early and see how much we can cover in the next month. That, and with all of the cold weather I can't get out and exercise, so why not write?
I think the first topic for discussion is the proposal to change the Chase. Brian France has come up with the idea of making it a 16-car Chase with eliminations during the 10 races.
I think it is funny that in most professional sports a potential rule change has to go through several people and committees. In NASCAR though, it requires a committee of one - Brian.
That is another column, so let's get back to the Chase. I really don't have a problem with it because I think something needs to change to put people back in the stands. The excitement has long been gone so eliminating drivers as the Chase progresses is intriguing. When they get to the final race only the top four drivers will have a chance to win and they will all have the same points.
I just wonder how much NASCAR will attempt to control the outcome or how much it will try to control the nine races prior to the final? Of course no one knows but I imagine we will find out as soon as this year! I look for this to happen and I think it will soon, maybe before Daytona!
I would love to hear your thoughts about this change and others and you are going to have your chance. Usually we host a Daytona 500 party here at my house, but this year I want to try something different. I have always wanted to meet some of the readers of "In The Draft" but I never could figure out how to make it happen. Until now!
On Sunday, Feb. 23 we are going to be at Goodfellas in Sanford for the Daytona 500. That may not sound too exciting to some but we are planning to make it a meet and greet. I want to meet the readers and talk racing with you. We have named it the "Daytona In The Draft Meet and Greet hosted by Goodfellas Get Together". We are planning door prizes and games as we all watch the race together on Goodfellas' many televisions in their newly remodeled grill.
I would love to have everyone attend, if it is only for a short period, but I just want to meet those who attempt to make sense out my writings. It sure will be a huge help so I will have some new topics to write about.
There are a couple of drawbacks to doing this. One, it unfortunately is Dutch. That means you have to pay for what you eat. I wish I could, but unless I win the lottery between now and then, that ain't happening! The other is you might be mentioned in the column so don't be afraid to share your thought and opinions.
As you can tell I didn't talk a lot about racing this week but we will really get to work next week. There is a lot to discuss and Daytona will be here soon. And I will be reminding everyone about Goodfellas. Until then see you next week and as Randy Quaid said in Independence Day, "Hey boys, I'm back!"
