Ravens put Mellette on injured reserve

Less than two weeks after making the Baltimore Ravens' roster out of preseason camp, rookie wide receiver Aaron Mellette was placed on injured reserve by Baltimore on Wednesday afternoon for a reported knee injury. Mellette will miss the rest of the season.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Mellette had not missed a practice until Wednesday.

Mellette, a former Southern Lee star and All-American receiver at Elon who was a seventh-round pick by the Ravens in last April's NFL Draft, made the 53-man roster after a good preseason. Mellette didn't dress on the 46-man active game day roster for the Ravens in their week-one loss at Denver last Thursday night.

A 6-foot-2, 220-pound rookie, Mellette caught nine receptions and two touchdowns in Baltimore's four preseason games. He was also working on special teams units during training camp. Mellette was one of six wide receivers to make the 53-man roster.

Despite not playing versus Denver, with two fellow Raven receivers, Jacoby Jones and Deonte Thompson, dealing with injuries, Mellette was potentially in line to be active and see his first regular-season action this Sunday when Baltimore will host Cleveland.

"Yes, we could see that," said Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh on Monday before Mellette's injury. "We'll just have to see how it all shakes out."

"He's playing well. There's nothing that he's doing that wouldn't make him a possibility to be active. We only had four receivers up," Harbaugh said.
