Bulldogs win CFVC title on Cavalier Senior Night
Isaiah Stallings made the game-winning shot with 17 seconds remaining to give Terry Sanford (19-4, 10-2) the Cape Fear Valley Conference season championship with a 55-54 win on Southern Lee's Senior Night Monday night on Cavalier Court.
The Bulldogs survived a wild finish and a game which went back and forth throughout. Noah Mellette led the Cavaliers (13-9, 7-5) with 15 points but just missed a possible Cavalier game-winner after Stallings' shot.
As the teams traded leads in the second half, a Mellette three-pointer gave Southern Lee a 53-50 lead with less than four minutes to play. Larry McLeod made a free throw to put the Cavs ahead 54-53 with under a minute remaining.
After the Bulldogs took the 55-54 lead, then with 10 seconds left, Bulldog guard Andrew Henrickson missed the front end of a 1-and-1. The Cavaliers were off and running for a final shot. As Mellette missed, the Southern Lee bench erupted at the buzzer looking for a shooting foul.
Tre Williams led the Bulldogs with 14 points. Kevin McLeod added eight points for the Cavs.
Southern Lee finishes as the CFVC's fourth seed heading into the conference tournament, giving the Cavaliers a home first-round game against No. 5 Union Pines (11-13, 4-8) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Terry Sanford earns a bye to Thursday's semifinals, which the Bulldogs will host.
The Lady Bulldogs (16-7, 10-2) also spoiled Southern Lee's Senior Night with a 39-31 win.
The Lady Cavaliers (11-11, 6-6) finish the CFVC regular season in a three-way tie for third with Westover and Gray's Creek but will be the No. 5 seed, drawing a first-round trip to No. 4 Gray's Creek at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Lady Cavs played a strong second half but couldn't overcome a scoreless first quarter. Terry Sanford center Ona Udoh had eight points and six rebounds in the first period.
After Terry Sanford was out to a 16-0 lead, Makenzie Cicogna's jumper got the Lady Cavs on the board with 6:04 left in the first half. Terry Sanford led 22-10 at halftime.
Cicogna went on to lead Southern Lee with 10 points with Jordanna Kalkhof chipping in six points.
Rachel Wilson's three-pointer cut the Lady Bulldog lead to 39-29 but with under a minute to play, it was too little, too late for the Lady Cavs.
Udoh and Courtney Roulhac scored 12 points each for Terry Sanford, which will be the No. 2 seed in the CFVC Tournament.
