Eastern Wayne knocks Lady Cavs from state tournament

NCHSAA 3A State Tournament - first round

Eastern Wayne 46, Southern Lee 38

No. 7-seeded Eastern Wayne (11-7) took the lead for good in the third quarter and got past the visiting No. 26 Lady Cavaliers (11-12) in the first round of the state tournament Monday night in Goldsboro.

Junior point guard Jasmine McIver led the Lady Cavs with 18 points and three steals. Senior Jordanna Kalkhof scored 13 points, including 4 of 8 three-point shooting. Junior center Makenzie Cicogna totaled 18 rebounds, six blocked shots and three assists.

Southern Lee led 17-16 at halftime before Eastern Wayne won the third quarter 19-8.

Union Pines 64, Southern Durham 47

The No. 4 Lady Vikings (21-2), the season champs of the Cape Fear Valley Conference, advanced past No. 29 Southern Durham (10-13) Monday night in Cameron. Union Pines hosts No. 13 Havelock (14-9) in the second round at 7 p.m. tonight.

Sophomore guard Maresa Smith paced a balanced Lady Viking offense with 12 points and five rebounds.

Tiffany Hicks had 11 points and 20 rebounds. Lexie Coxe scored 11 points including three three-pointers. Stephanie Johnson had nine points and five rebounds. Nyona Shields had seven points and five assists.

The Lady Vikings led 28-18 at halftime.

Triton 50, Cleveland 45 - OT

No. 14-seeded Triton (10-13) won overtime 13-8 to advance past Two Rivers mate No. 19 Cleveland (13-10) on Monday night in Erwin.

After Cleveland topped the Lady Hawks in both regular season meetings, Triton beat Cleveland during its three-game run to the Two Rivers Conference Tournament title, then again in the opening round of states.

Octavia Hart led the Lady Hawks with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Tarica Worney had 13 points and nine rebounds. Adaisha Harris had three points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Triton plays at No. 3 West Craven (22-1) in the second round at 7 p.m. tonight.

Terry Sanford 44, Northwood 40 - OT

No. 22 Northwood (16-7) nearly upset No. 11 Terry Sanford (18-5) in Fayetteville Monday night. Terry Sanford outscored the Lady Chargers 7-3 in overtime.

Terry Sanford travels to play No. 6 South Johnston in tonight's second round.

NCHSAA 1A State Tournament - first round

Mount Airy 80, Chatham Central 49

No. 8 Mount Airy (19-4), also the Lady Bears, defeated No. 9 Chatham Central (13-10) Monday night. Mt. Airy led 56-27 at halftime.

Chatham's Lady Bears finish the season 13-10.

Boys basketball

NCHSAA 1A State Tournament - first round

Chatham Central 81, West Montgomery 73

Senior forward Zack Burke poured in 37 points leading the No. 10-seeded Bears (14-9) over Yadkin Valley rival No. 7 West Montgomery (8-15) Monday night.

Burke made 13 of 19 field goals while getting 19 rebounds and four steals. John Thomas Moore scored 17 points and Scotty Polston added 11 points for the Bears.

The Bears and Warriors split four meetings this season.

Chatham Central goes on the road again, to No. 2 Winston-Salem Prep (19-4), for the second round at 7 p.m. tonight.

North Moore 45, Pine Lake Prep 41

No. 4 North Moore (16-7) edged No. 13 Pine Lake Prep (11-11) in a first round game in Robbins Monday night. The Mustangs host No. 12 Mount Airy (15-8) in the second round at 7 p.m. tonight. Mount Airy defeated No. 5 North Stanly 71-66 on Monday.

NCHSAA 3A State Tournament - first round

McMichael 69, Triton 55

No. 29 McMichael (12-11) upset No. 4 Triton (17-6) Monday night in Erwin.

Da'Kyrian Brown scored 26 points and Quan Mills scored 24 as the visitors had four players do all the scoring.

Tyler Vaughn led the Hawks with 14 points and D'Angelo Harris added 13 points.

Triton ends the season as season and tournament champion of the Two Rivers Conference.

West Brunswick 68, Union Pines 49

No. 5 West Brunswick (16-6) defeated the visiting No. 28 Vikings (11-12) in the first round Monday night. Gary Cheers scored 24 points to lead West Brunswick.
