Mellette catches first TD as a pro
Former Southern Lee star Aaron Mellette made his first catch in his Baltimore Raven debut an extra-memorable one in the fourth quarter of Baltimore's 44-16 win at Tampa Bay Thursday night.
Baltimore, the defending Super Bowl champion, opened its preseason against the Buccaneers, who were 7-9 last season. Baltimore drafted Mellette, a multiple-time FCS All-American from Elon University, in the seventh round of April's draft.
The former Cavalier ran a fade route and made a jumping grab over a Tampa Bay cornerback for a 21-yard touchdown pass from second-string quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who's a three-year pro from Virginia Tech. Mellette's catch made it 40-16 Ravens with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Mellette got to celebrate, then tweeted about it.
"@A_Mellette3: Favorite moment tonight was when I hit my big bruhs @TheRealJacoby12 (Jacoby Jones) td celebration and he was the first person to congratulate me."
Torrey Smith, Jones and Tandon Doss are considered to be the top three Raven receivers headed into the season and listed as such on the team's depth chart. Down Baltimore's receiver roster Thursday, David Reed didn't play due to injury and Deonte Thompson had one catch before leaving with an injury. LaQuan Williams had one receiving touchdown and a touchdown on a blocked punt recovery.
Baltimore's next preseason game will be versus Atlanta in Baltimore at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
