Cavs keep winning streaks going
Both Southern Lee varsity basketball squads took their winning streaks to four Tuesday night with lopsided Cape Fear Valley Conference wins at Douglas Byrd Tuesday night.
The Cavaliers (4-3, 1-0) pulled away throughout the last three quarters for a 60-36 win over the Eagles (1-6, 0-1). Southern Lee led by a bucket after eight minutes before winning the second quarter 20-5 to take a 32-15 halftime lead.
Guard Cameron Martin led the Cavaliers with 14 points, including two three-pointers. Larry McLeod, Kevin McLeod and Josh Garner added eight points each. Southern Lee's defense has held five of its seven opponents, including in three of the Cavalier victories, to 44 or fewer points.
The Lady Cavaliers (5-2, 1-0) held Douglas Byrd to seven points or fewer in each period for an easy 67-20 win.
Four of the five Lady Cavalier starters scored in double digits led by junior center Makenzie Cicogna getting 17 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Jordanna Kalkhof had 16 points. Point guard Jasmine McIver had 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds and Rachel Wilson had 10 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
Southern Lee led the Lady Eagles (0-5, 0-1) 32-11 at halftime.
The Cavs and Lady Cavs will play their CFVC home openers Friday night versus Gray's Creek with the girls game tipping at 6 p.m. on Cavalier Court.
