Brightbill wins gold medal at Georgia State Games

Eli Brightbill, a rising senior at Southern Lee High School, won the gold medal in his division at the 2014 Georgia State Games 5K Open Water Swimming Championships on July 12 on Georgia's Lake Allatoona.

Brightbill won the men's 17-18-year-old division title with a time of 1:21.20. He finished fourth overall.

His gold medal makes him eligible for the National State Games of America to be held in Lincoln, Neb. July 28-Aug. 2, 2015.

Brightbill is a senior member of the Sanford Squids swim team. For the Cavaliers, Brightbill made the NCHSAA 3A State Championships in the 200-meter individual medley and 100 butterfly in February. He won Cape Fear Valley Conference title in the individual medley and 500 freestyle.

In addition to leading in the pool, Brightbill will oversee Southern Lee's JROTC program as the Cavalier Battalion Commander and he is the chairman of the Central Carolina Teenage Republicans.
