Lady Cav defense keys CFVC win
Pitching a shutout in the first quarter, Southern Lee's girls basketball squad rolled to its third win in its last four games, beating Westover (4-4, 1-2) 45-27 Tuesday night on Cavalier Court.
The Lady Cavaliers (3-6, 2-0) won the opening quarter 13-0. Jasmine McIver made two three-pointers in the 13-0 start.
Southern Lee continued on to a 26-7 halftime lead. The Lady Wolverines used a full-court press to chip into Southern Lee's lead in the third quarter, getting to within 32-21 heading to the fourth quarter.
The Lady Cavaliers regained control thanks to Brianna Taylor's senior leadership and point guard play, along with rebounding by Rachel Wilson and Erin Pickens.
Taylor led the Lady Cavaliers with 12 points and five assists. Southern Lee got balanced production from Jordanna Kalkhof, with nine points and five rebounds, Pickens, with eight points, eight boards and three assists, McIver, with eight points and 2-of-2 three-point shooting, and Wilson with six points and eight boards.
Through Tuesday night's games, Southern Lee and Overhills are both 2-0 atop the Cape Fear Valley Conference and the last two undefeated squads in league play.
The Lady Cavs will play in the Lee County Basketball Shootout starting Dec. 27 with a game versus Northwood at 2 p.m.
