Cavaliers rout Douglas Byrd 11-0
Southern Lee made quick work of visiting Douglas Byrd for an 11-0 conference win Friday night, which was exactly what the Cavaliers (6-3, 3-1) needed after an otherwise tough week.
Southern Lee fell on the road at Union Pines on Tuesday and at Pinecrest Thursday before getting back on the right track in CFVC play. The Cavaliers led 7-0 after one inning against the Eagles and Christian Wenger pitched a five-inning one-hitter.
Starting with Jared Kehagias sending a triple to the left-center field fence, the first four Cavs notched hits in what turned into 11 Cavs going to the plate in the first.
Freddy McCollum and Derek Jackson had RBI singles. Cullen Boyette ripped a two-RBI triple, giving him three triples and 14 RBI on the season.
Trei Chalmers singled in a run with a two-out knock into left. Two more runs, coming unearned, with two outs made it 7-0.
The Cavaliers put the game into mercy-rule range with three runs in the third and one more in the fourth. Ethan Helsman drove in two RBI with a triple, the Cavs' third triple on the night, making it 10-0 in the third.
Helsman, Jackson and Wenger had two hits each. McCollum and Chalmers scored two runs each. On the mound, Wenger (2-0) struck out eight and walked two.
The Cavaliers continue in the CFVC and at home on Tuesday, hosting Overhills at 7 p.m.
