Yellow Jackets clinch state spot, advance to CFVC semis

Lee County 75, Gray's Creek 52
No. 3-seeded Lee County (19-5) cruised by No. 6 Gray's Creek for the Jackets' third win this season over the Bears in the first round of the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament Tuesday night.
The Yellow Jackets exploded for 27 points in the second quarter, making a single-digit advantage a 42-26 lead at halftime.
Lee County, combined with other tournament results Tuesday, clinched an NCHSAA 3A State Tournament spot. The Jackets earned a date with No. 2 Westover in the CFVC semifinals this evening, at 6 p.m., at top-seeded Terry Sanford. Terry Sanford faces No. 4 Southern Lee in the second semifinal.
Westover is 2-0 versus Lee County this season including a 52-50 win at Lee County on Monday.

Jordan-Matthews 76, Reidsville 67
No. 4 Jordan-Matthews completed a three-game sweep of the No. 5 Rams in the first round of the Mid-State Conference Tournament Tuesday night. The Jets (9-15) led 38-29 at halftime.
The Jets played top-seeded Cummings in a semifinal game last night. The final is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Cummings.

Pine Forest 73, Overhills 56
No. 3 Pine Forest (17-8) pulled away in the third quarter, going from a 39-32 halftime lead to a 62-43 lead after three quarters, to advance past No. 6 Overhills in the first round of the Mid-South Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday night. The Jaguars finish the season 9-15.

Lumberton 65, Pinecrest 64
Lumberton (11-10, 4-4) edged the Patriots (6-14, 3-6) in a Southeastern Conference game in Southern Pines Tuesday night.
Senior forward Demetri Sheridan led Lumberton with 19 points.
Pinecrest will play its regular-season finale hosting Hoke County at 7:30 p.m. Friday. There won't be an SEC Tournament this season.

North Moore 72, West Montgomery 63
The Mustangs (14-8, 11-2) completed a sweep of Yadkin Valley foe West Montgomery on the road Tuesday night.
North Moore trailed by three at the half before a 22-10 third quarter put the Mustangs ahead 56-47.
The Mustangs, 7-0 in the YVC East Division, have clinched the division title.
North Moore will finish its regular season hosting Chatham Central at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Due to snow and rescheduled games, there won't be a YVC Tournament this season.

Girls basketball
Westover 74, Lee County 44
A night after finished the regular season with a 57-52 win against the Lady Wolverines, No. 6 Lee County fell at No. 3 Westover in the first round of the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament Tuesday evening.
Lee County (7-17) led 12-8 after a period. Westover (10-14) rallied to a 27-18 halftime lead.
Noelle Beattie led the Lady Jackets with 14 points. Shantel Bennett had nine points and six assists. MaKaylia McIver added eight points.
Westover plays No. 2 Terry Sanford in tonight's semifinals at Union Pines.

Gray's Creek 61, Southern Lee 58
No. 4 Gray's Creek (11-13) edged visiting No. 5 Southern Lee (11-12) in the first round of the CFVC Tournament Tuesday night.
Rachel Wilson led Southern Lee with 23 points and Makenzie Cicogna scored 16 points.
The Lady Bears took two out of three games versus Southern Lee this season. Gray's Creek plays No. 1 Union Pines at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Union Pines.

Jordan-Matthews 50, Bartlett Yancey 41
No. 5 Jordan-Matthews advanced through the first round of the Mid-State Conference Tournament winning at No. 4 Bartlett Yancey (8-13) Tuesday night.
The Lady Jets (6-16) played a semifinal game at No. 1 Reidsville last night. The Mid-State final is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Cummings.

Seventy-First 78, Overhills 42
No. 2-seeded Seventy-First topped the No. 7 Lady Jaguars (7-12) for the third time this season in the Mid-South Athletic Conference Tournament first round Tuesday.

Pinecrest 39, Lumberton 34
The Lady Patriots (7-12, 4-5) turned around a 58-32 Lumberton (13-8, 4-4) win from January with a victory at home Tuesday evening. Point guard Jasmine Chalmers had 16 points and seven steals for the Lady Patroits. Pinecrest will finish its regular season hosting Hoke County at 6 p.m. Friday.

West Montgomery 68, North Moore 38
West Montgomery jumped out to a 24-4 lead through one quarter and rolled by visiting North Moore (7-14, 5-9) in a Yadkin Valley game Tuesday night. The Lady Mustangs will host Chatham Central at 6 p.m. Friday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
