Vikings storm Southern Lee, 14-6
Union Pines rallied from an early 5-0 hole, then exploded for an eight-run sixth inning to take command and go on to a 14-6 win over Southern Lee in the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament semifinals Tuesday evening at Southern Lee.
The No. 3-seeded Vikings (14-10) will face No. 1 Terry Sanford (19-5) in the final at 7 p.m. Thursday at Southern Lee.
In the fourth Viking vs. Cavalier game of the season, with Southern Lee having won two of the first three, the Cavs broke out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings.
Union Pines fought back to a 5-5 tie going to the sixth before the huge eight-run rally.
Emmitt Carden led the Viking offense going 5 for 6 with a double, two runs and two RBI.
Relief pitcher Kyle Robinson got the win, coming on in the Southern Lee second and going 3.0 innings. He allowed two hits and an unearned run. Evan Shearer followed Robinson and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings.
Mason Collins drove in three runs for the Vikings. Carden, Riley Cameron, Dalton Garner, Tyler McRae, Brandon Oakley and Avery Siege scored two runs apiece.
For the Cavaliers, Cullen Boyette went 2 for 3 and scored a run. Conner Showalter went 2 for 3 and had an RBI. Ryan Holmes had two RBI.
Terry Sanford defeated No. 4 Gray's Creek (12-10) 10-4 in the late semifinal Tuesday. The Bulldogs, Cavaliers, Vikings and Bears have clinched NCHSAA 3A State Tournament spots.
