It hasn't always been pretty. It certainly hasn't been as dominating as last year's Lady Cavalier championship run in the Cape Fear Valley Conference.

No matter though, because Southern Lee keeps finding ways to win and the Lady Cavaliers (7-7, 4-0) stayed perfect in conference play with a 45-37 win over Douglas Byrd Friday night at Cavalier Court.

Senior guard Brianna Taylor led the Lady Cavaliers with 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals. Taylor led the Cavs with her defensive hustle throughout. She sparked her side with two key buckets early in the fourth quarter.

Trailing 33-28, Douglas Byrd seized the momentum with the first five points of the last quarter. Sade Rogers, who scored all 11 Lady Eagle points in the third quarter, banked in a deep three-pointer on the first Douglas Byrd trip of the fourth, then scored on a drive into the lane, continuing to single-handedly keep pace with the Lady Cavs.

Taylor put her side back in front just as quickly. She hit a short pull-up jumper in the lane, then following a Lady Eagle turnover, Taylor made a spot-up triple from the top of the key for a 38-33 Lady Cavalier lead.

It was grinding and tough, but Southern Lee's defense took care of business from there, holding the Lady Eagles to two field goals in the last seven minutes of the game.

The Lady Cavs survived their own drought opening the game. It took almost six minutes for the home team to get on the board. Fortunately, or with plenty of the Lady Cavalier defense, when Jordanna Kalkhof made a three-pointer for the first Cav points, it was only a 6-3 Lady Eagle lead.

Southern Lee led 9-8 after one quarter and 21-17 at halftime. Kalkhof led the Lady Cavs with seven points in the half. Guard Brittany Trotman scored 12 points for the Lady Eagles.

Douglas Byrd gained a brief lead, 22-21, early in the third period. The Lady Cavaliers finished the third with a 9-4 run to lead going to the fourth quarter. Taylor scored nine of her 15 points in the second half.

Kalkhof finished with 11 points. Makenzie Cicogna had six points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Deshele Sumpter, in action for the first time since an injury in a Lady Cavalier victory at Western Harnett on Dec. 11, had five points, five rebounds and three steals.

Rogers led Douglas Byrd with 18 points, 12 rebounds and five steals.

From an 0-5 start to the season during tough non-conference preparation, Southern Lee has won seven of its last nine games.

The Lady Cavaliers host county rival Lee County this evening at 5 p.m. The Lady Cavs will be trying for a sweep after a 40-32 win over the Lady Yellow Jackets on Dec. 15.
