CFVC selects its best on the diamond
Gray’s Creek senior and future East Carolina hurler T.J. McDonald was named the Cape Fear Valley Conference’s Player of the Year for the 2013 baseball campaign last week.
Southern Lee, co-champion with Gray’s Creek for the CFVC season, had four players selected all-conference: senior shortstop Jared Kehagias, senior pitcher/outfielder/first baseman Derek Jackson, junior third baseman Cullen Boyette and junior catcher Ethan Helsman.
Kehagias, who has committed to a scholarship to play at North Carolina Central, hit .383 as the Cavalier leadoff man. He scored 25 runs, was 17-of-18 on stolen base attempts and hit four doubles and two triples.
Jackson, who has accepted a scholarship to play at North Carolina A&T, led the Cavs on the mound and in the middle of the batting order. Jackson went 7-2 with two saves, four complete games and a 1.58 ERA. He recorded 73 strikeouts in 53.1 innings pitched. At the plate, he hit .358 with 25 runs, 15 RBI, five doubles and two triples.
Boyette led the Cavaliers (20-8) with a .443 batting average and totaled nine doubles, four triples, two homers and 35 RBI. Helsman hit .372 with six doubles, three triples and 27 RBI.
Gray’s Creek (19-6) led the CFVC team with five players recognized. McDonald had a 5-1 record with a 1.67 ERA while adding a .387 batting average, four doubles, three triples and 21 RBI to the Bear offense.
Western Harnett and Union Pines had three players make all-conference.
Senior shortstop/pitcher Josh Genthe, senior pitcher/third baseman Shane Godfrey and senior pitcher/outfielder Kenan Marion led the Eagles to the CFVC Tournament championship after Western Harnett finished fourth in the regular season. Genthe has accepted a scholarship to play ball at Coastal Carolina next year.
For the Vikings, seniors Jeffrey Thompson and Noble Davis and junior Emmitt Carden were all-conference.
Carden hit .500 with seven doubles and 35 RBI. Thompson hit .463 with eight doubles, three triples, four homers and 33 RBI while having a 5-2 record on the mound. Davis was 4-1 with a 1.71 ERA on the mound and hit .400 with 30 runs, six doubles, two homers and 20 RBI.
