Lady Cavs cruise in season-opener

Southern Lee pitched a shutout for a quarter and went on to a 41-20 victory to begin its girls basketball campaign at Pinecrest Tuesday night.

The Lady Cavaliers routed Pinecrest 17-0 in the first quarter and kept the defensive effort going from there.

Senior Jordanna Kalkhof led the Lady Cavaliers with 17 points, including four three-pointers. Senior Rachel Wilson had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Makenzie Cicogna had six points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Jasmine McIver had six points and six steals.

The Lady Cavaliers (1-0) will host Grace Christian at 6 p.m. this evening. Pinecrest (0-1) plays at North Moore at 6 p.m. this evening.

In the boys game in Southern Pines, the Cavaliers (0-1) led going to the fourth quarter before the Patriots (1-0) prevailed 43-36. Pinecrest won the fourth quarter 22-14.

Southern Lee plays its home opener versus Hillside at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Pinecrest will host North Moore at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Patriots won the JV boys game 79-58 over Southern Lee.
