CCCC Cougars soar over Tar Heel JV
CHAPEL HILL – The Central Carolina Community College Cougars soared high for an 81-68 win over UNC-Chapel Hill's junior varsity basketball team at the Dean Smith Center last Sunday.
Julian Bailey, from Cape Fear High School, led the Cougar victory with 10 points and 15 rebounds, including 11 defensive rebounds. The Cougars grabbed 41 rebounds total, the hallmark of the team’s outstanding defensive play.
Josh Lee, of Southern Lee, led all the scorers from both teams with 23 points. Lee turned turnovers and steals into fast-break lay-ups. He scored off of acrobatic moves and a three-pointer by Lee stopped a Tar Heel rally.
Diamond Gibbs, out of Westover, scored 12 points. His play at center solidified the defense and opened the court on offense. Gibbs has had two excellent games in row and is impressing the Cougar coaches.
The Cougars' ffense and defense was a team effort of all 14 players. Head coach Doug Connor kept the team focused, reminding them that the Tar Heels would come back strong the second they eased up.
The Cougars have been playing the Tar Heel JV team for 15 years, with just a few wins to show for their effort, so the win was very sweet. After the game, UNC JV coach Hubert Davis said he was very impressed with the power of the Cougar play and with Connor’s coaching.
The Cougars stayed for the UNC varsity game against Belmont, which did not end well for the Tar Heels either. The court was not kind to its home team that night and the Cougars loved being a part of it.
The win against the Tar Heel JV team came during the National Junior College Athletic Association Region X Blast-Off Tournament Nov. 15-18 at Wake Technical C.C. CCCC defeated Tidewater C.C. (Va.) 88-72 and St. Andrews University JV 88-58.
