Jordanna Kalkhof's three-point shooting was exactly what Southern Lee needed at exactly the right time for a 47-38 Lady Cavalier win against Cape Fear Valley foe Gray's Creek Tuesday night.
After Gray's Creek rolled off nine straight points, ending with Taylor Williams hitting a three-pointer for a 33-33 score, Kalkhof stopped the visitors' momentum with two big shots.
The Lady Cavs rushed the ball up the floor after the Lady Bear three-pointer and Kalkhof drained a spot-up jumper from a stride beyond the right wing.
After Southern Lee got a defensive stop, Kalkhof hit another triple, this one from the top of the key, and suddenly, the Lady Cavs led 39-33 with 3:08 left in the game and it turned out to be enough for Southern Lee (8-9, 5-1) to hang on over the Lady Bears (3-11, 2-4).
The Lady Cavs had the last run in a game of runs and finally put the Lady Bears away, which was a chore.
Gray's Creek opened the game taking an 11-5 lead. Kylee William hit two jumpers for five points and forward Kristel Black scored four points inside.
Southern Lee trailed 13-12 after a quarter and edged ahead 17-15 at halftime.
The Lady Cavs scored the first seven points of the third quarter, only for Gray's Creek to hold the Cavs to two points in the last five-plus minutes of the quarter and chip Southern Lee's lead down to 26-22 with a quarter to go.
Southern Lee got a hoop from Ashley Owens, as she got the ball at the high post and drove down the lane for a lay-up, to score first in the fourth period. Erin Pickens made a three-point play in the paint to take the Lady Cavalier lead to 31-22. Southern Lee led 33-24 before the Lady Bears came back to tie the game.
Kalkhof's six straight points spurred the Lady Cavs back to a nine-point lead. The Lady Cavs left a bunch of free throws on the foul line down the stretch, allowing Gray's Creek to get back as close as five points, 43-38, but no closer.
Kalkhof led the Lady Cavs with 13 points. Owens had 11 points and seven rebounds. Point guard Brianna Taylor had eight points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Pickens finished with eight points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Black led Gray's Creek with 10 points and 15 rebounds. William, Jayln Tayor and Taylor Williams scored eight points each.
The Lady Cavaliers begin the second half of their Cape Fear Valley slate on Friday, hosting Western Harnett at 6:30 p.m. Southern Lee beat Western Harnett 32-26 back on Dec. 11.
