For Southern Lee's baseball squad, spring break is a break from the classroom but not from work on the diamond. The Cavaliers, along with Cape Fear Valley neighbor Union Pines, are the co-hosts for this week's Chatlee Boat and Marine Easter Invitational Tournament beginning at both schools on Thursday.

Southern Lee and Union Pines will host doubleheaders Thursday and Friday evenings. Union Pines will host a quadruple-header for the final day of the tournament on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. The championship game is set for 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Cavaliers (8-3, 5-1 CFVC) will play a crosstown game against Grace Christian (5-2, 2-0 Carolina Christian) in the second game at Cavalier Park on the opening night.

The Crusaders went 3-0 last week, piling up 52 runs in the three victories, including a 23-9 win over city and CCC rival Lee Christian. Grace Christian's early-season success also includes a 5-1 win over Wayne Country Day, the NCISAA 1A state runner-up a season ago. Aaron Ayers pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts, along with a homer at the plate, in that Crusader victory.

Southern Lee's won three straight conference games coming into the tournament. The Cavaliers gave Gray's Creek its first league loss, with a 3-2 result, at Gray's Creek last Thursday. Prior to the win over the Bears, the Cavs blanked Overhills and Douglas Byrd.

Derek Jackson is 2-1 with two saves while Connor Gaines is 3-2 and Christian Wenger is 2-0.

Offensively for the Cavs, Cullen Boyette is hitting .464 with three triples and 16 RBI. Ethan Helsman is hitting .414 with three triples and 11 RBI. Freddy McCollum has a .367 average and a team-high 13 runs.

The first game at Southern Lee on Thursday will be North Moore (5-6, 5-4 Yadkin Valley) versus Surry Central (8-5, 6-2 2A Northwest).

The Mustangs come in after facing the top YVC competition last week but falling 2-0 at Chatham Central and 2-1 at South Stanly. Dustin Morrison pitched a complete game against Chatham Central and has a 2-1 mark and a 0.84 ERA on the season. At the plate, Kirby Lambert is hitting .364 with a triple, a homer and seven RBI. Cody Vaughn is hitting .344 with 11 runs and three doubles.

At Union Pines on Thursday, the host Vikings (8-2, 4-1 CFVC) will play county neighbor O'Neal (0-3, 0-1 Cape Fear Independent) in the late game.

The Vikings have been off since a 19-2 win at Western Harnett on March 22 but have a three-game winning streak, with a 7-4 win over Southern Lee in the streak.

Senior Jeffrey Thompson is leading the Vikings on the mound and at the plate. He has a 3-0 record with a save and a 1.58 ERA while hitting .481 with 17 runs and 10 RBI.
