Brick City Bowl becomes season finale

Apr. 07, 2013 @ 05:01 AM

Lee County's first football season as a 3A program will start in South Carolina and the regular-season finale will be Brick City Bowl VIII, It will be the first time Lee County and Southern Lee will clash as county plus conference rivals.

With statewide North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) realignment going into effect this upcoming school year, Lee County is going from 4A and its longtime membership in the Tri-Nine Conference, to 3A and a revamped Cape Fear Valley Conference.

Southern Lee, under first-year head coach Don Simon, who was hired in February, stays in the CFVC along with Douglas Byrd, Gray's Creek, Union Pines and Westover.

Terry Sanford, who the Yellow Jackets beat 57-35 in a first-round state playoff game in Sanford this past November, is moving from the 4A Mid-South Conference to the 3A Cape Fear Valley.

The Jackets, after a 9-4 season in which they reached the second round of the state playoffs in their last 4A campaign and finished second in their last Tri-Nine season, will travel to face Spartanberg Christian (S.C.) on the first Friday of the season.

Southern Lee's start to the season, after a 2-9 mark last fall, sends the Cavs on the road three straight Friday nights.

The Cavaliers will meet rival, but no longer a conference rival, Western Harnett on Aug. 23 for their first game under Simon. The Cavs fell 27-21 at Western Harnett last season.

The Cape Fear Valley is losing Western Harnett and Overhills. Western Harnett will be joining a conference with Triton, South Johnston, Smithfield-Selma, Corinth Holders and Cleveland. Overhills will be a 4A school for the next four years and in a league with Cumberland County schools Jack Britt, Cape Fear, Pine Forest, E.E. Smith and South View.

The Cavaliers will have seven common opponents between 2012 and 2013. A 63-55 win over Union Pines is the only Cavalier victory in that category.

The Jackets will make three trips to Fayetteville in their first circuit through the Cape Fear Valley. Lee County will face Gray's Creek and Douglas Byrd, two of the three CFVC tri-champions along departed Overhills, in the first two weeks of conference play.

Now as conference rivals, so perhaps with postseason implications on the line in addition to all the same county bragging rights, the Yellow Jackets and Cavaliers will play Brick City Bowl VIII on Nov. 8 to close the regular season. Lee County and Southern Lee have met in the season-opener the last two years. The Jackets won 49-0 at Southern Lee last season; making the series record 5-2 for the Jackets.

Squads around North Carolina can begin official preseason practices on Aug. 1 and preseason scrimmages begin on Aug. 10.
